* Book 1 is a four-part prose text on the salvation process, beginning with the ascension to heaven of Seth, in advance of his father Adam ( compare Sethian Gnosticism ).

It should be noted that the Nag Hammadi library Sethian text Trimorphic Protennoia identifies Gnosticism as professing Father, Son and feminine wisdom Sophia or as Professor John D. Turner denotes, God the Father, Sophia the Mother, and Logos the Son.

There are two versions of Gnosticism as well that have substantial differences: the Sethian and Valentinian systems.

Sethian Gnosticism has deeper roots in Judaism while Valentinian Gnosticism has a deeper root in Christianity.

In the Ophite and Sethian systems, which have many affinities with that last mentioned, the making of the world is ascribed to a company of seven archons, whose names are given, but their chief, “ Yaldabaoth ” ( also known as " Yaltabaoth " or " Ialdabaoth ") comes into still greater prominence.

Sethian is a Finnish progressive metal band, originally formed in 1998 but whose debut album, Into the Silence, was not completed and released until 2003.

The Secret Book of John ( Apocryphon of John ) is a 2nd-century AD Sethian Gnostic Christian text of secret teachings.

The Valentinian version is more overtly Christianized than the Apocryphon of John which is called the Sethian version.

In the Apocryphon of John, a tractate in the Nag Hammadi Library containing the most extensive recounting of the Sethian creation myth, the Barbēlō is described as " the first power, the glory, Barbēlō, the perfect glory in the aeons, the glory of the revelation ".

Unlike other non-Nicenian Gospels, the Gospel of Judas is Sethian in orientation in that Adam's son Seth is seen as a spiritual ancestor.

As in other Sethian documents, Jesus is equated with Seth: " The first is Seth, who is called Christ ".

The main contents concern the Sethian Gnostic understanding of how the earth came into being, how Seth, in the Gnostic interpretation, is incarnated as Jesus in order to release people's souls from the evil prison that is creation.

Zostrianos is a Sethian Gnostic text from the New Testament apocrypha.

However, in dualistic theologies such as that of Gnosticism, the two deities are not of equal rank, and the role of the Gnostic demiurge is closer to that of the Devil in Christian trinitarian theology than a diarch on equal terms with God ( who is represented in pantheistic fashion, as Pleroma ).

Gnosticism is Panentheistic, believing that the true God is separate from the physical universe however, there are aspects of the true God in the physical universe as well.

Valentinian Gnosticism claims that matter came about through emanations of the supreme being, and to some this event is held to be more of an accident than of being on purpose.

This position was crucial in the Christian confrontation with Cynicism and some of the chief forms of Gnosticism, such as Manichaeism, which taught that man is by nature flawed and therefore not responsible for evil in himself or in the world.

However the inter-relation of Manicheanism, Orphism, Gnosticism and neo-Platonism is far from clear.

Gnosticism refers to several beliefs seeing evil as due to the world being created by an imperfect god, the demiurge and is contrasted with a superior entity.
