* The early wars between the Macedonian Slavs and the Byzantines ( from medieval sources )

* August 7 – The Byzantines defeat the Avars, Slavs and Persians who were besieging Constantinople for the first time.

The slaves were mostly captured by Venice from Dalmatia, the Holy Roman Empire from what is now Prussia and Poland, and the Byzantines from elsewhere in the Balkans, and were generally destined for other parts of the Byzantine Empire and ( most frequently ) the Muslim states surrounding the Mediterranean: the Abbasid Caliphate, the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba, the Emirate of Sicily, and the Fatimid Caliphate ( which relied on Slavs purchased at the Bari market for its legions of Sakalaba Mamluks ).

The Byzantines viewed all the nations of Northern Europe, be they Franks or Slavs, as barbarians.

Situated at the crossroads of the East and West, Bulgaria has been home to many civilizations-Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, Proto-Bulgarians, and Ottomans.

The Byzantines were led by Leontios at the Battle of Sebastopolis in 692 in Asia Minor and were decisively defeated by the Caliph after the defection of a large contingent of Slavs.

The Slavs, the Arabs and the Byzantines knew them as the Rus ' or Rhōs, probably derived from various uses of rōþs -, i. e. " related to rowing ", or derived from the area of Roslagen in east-central Sweden, where most of the Norsemen who visited the Slavic lands came from.

In the 6th century, some Thraco-Romans and hellenized Thracians ( i. e. Byzantines ) south of the Danube River made contacts with the invading Slavs and were later eventually slavicised.

The assembled army consisted of contingents of Byzantines, Slavs, Franks, Georgians, Armenians and Christian Arabs.

From the Slavs the term passed to other peoples, such as the Hungarians (" oláh ", referring to Vlachs, more specifically Romanians, " olasz ", referring to Italians ) and Byzantines (" Βλάχοι ", " Vláhi ") and was used for all Latin people of the Balkans.

The Slavs were eventually defeated, gathered by the Byzantines and placed into segregated communities known as Sclaviniae.

The Karabisanoi were later divided by Justinian II into the Theme of Hellas ( centred on Corinth ) and the Cibyrrhaeotic Theme By this time, the Slavs were no longer a threat to the Byzantines since they had been either defeated numerous times or placed in the Sclaviniae.

The Slavic communities in Bithynia were destroyed by the Byzantines after General Leontios lost to the Arabs in the Battle of Sebastopolis in 692 as a result of the Slavs having defected to the Arab side.

It was conquered by the Byzantines in 549, and remained part of the Eastern Empire for five centuries, with brief conquests by Saracens, Lombards, Hungarians and Slavs.

After ten years of uneasy, undocumented peace, Bayan again marched against Sirmium, wresting it from Byzantine hands after a two-year siege, then took also Singidunum, evicting the Byzantines from the inner Balkans and opening the area to an unstoppable influx of Slavs, that in five years at most flooded all the semi-abandoned region down to the Peloponnesus.

It featured several sallies and minor engagements, as well as several large-scale actions, but after reinforcements from Constantinople arrived in April 537 ( 1, 600 Slavs and Huns ) and November 537 ( 5, 000 men ), the defending Byzantines took the offensive.

She had constantly devoted herself to the service of the church and peace, and to the empire as guardian of both ; she also interested herself in the conversion of the Slavs.

The Slavs between the Elbe and the Oder rivers were also subjugated.

By the time of Constans II ( who also organized campaigns against the Slavs ), the significant number of the Slavs of Macedonia were captured and transferred to central Asia Minor where they were forced to recognize the authority of the Byzantine emperor and serve in its ranks.

Evidence also exists that certain Macedonian Slavs, particularly those in the northern regions, considered themselves as Serbs el come caca and the Greek Idea predominated in southern Macedonia where it was supported by substantial part of the Slavic population.

In Austria-Hungary Southern Slavs were distributed among several entities: Slovenes in the Austrian part ( Carniola, Styria, Carinthia, Gorizia and Gradisca, Trieste, Istria ( also Croats )), Croats and Serbs in the Hungarian part within the autonomous Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia and in the Austrian part within the autonomous Kingdom of Dalmatia, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, under direct control from Vienna.

This Slavic tribe, also known as the Alpine Slavs, was submitted to Avar rule before joining the Slavic chieftain Samo's Slavic tribal union in 623 AD.

During the Middle Ages, because of international Hanseatic trading routes and contingent migration during the Middle Ages, Saxons mixed with and had strong influences upon the languages and cultures of the North Germanic and Baltic and Finnic peoples, and also upon the Polabian Slavs and Pomeranian West Slavic people.

Their German neighbors adapted the term they had been using for peoples east of the Elbe River before to the Slavs, calling them Wends as they called the Venedi before and probably the Vandals also.

One of the possible reasons for Henry's attack was also the formation of the anti-Saxon alliance between Bohemia, the Polabian Slavs and the Magyars.

This brought the Polans into Germany's sphere of influence and into conflict with Otto I's Kingdom of Germany, who also desired to conquer the Polbian Slavs.

The Obotrites (, ), also commonly known as the Obodrites, Abotrites, or Abodrites, were a confederation of medieval West Slavic tribes within the territory of modern Mecklenburg and Holstein in northern Germany ( see Polabian Slavs ).

( There is also a suggestion that the state's namesake and the term Slesvig originated from a tribe of West Slavs who lived in " Slavsvick " between the 5th century and 10th century AD.

It is believed that up to the 14th century, ancestors of the modern Ukrainians spoke dialects of the language known collectively as Old East Slavic ( today known as Ruthenian language ), also spoken by other East Slavs of Kievan Rus.

Afterwards it was again invaded by the Avars in the 560s, the Slavs, who first settled c. 480s but became independent only since the 7th century, the Franks, who named a frontier march the March of Pannonia in the end of the 8th century, while terms Lower and Upper Pannonia were also used in the 9th century as a designations for a Slavic principality and a Frankish province.

The frequency of this haplogroup peaks in Albania ( 24 %), and is also high among Greeks, Romanians, Macedonian Slavs, Bulgarians, and southern Italians.

Magog is also sometimes said to be the ancestor of the Goths, Finns, Huns, and Slavs.

The territory settled by Slavs, however, was also inhabited by the remains of the indigenous Romanized population, which preserved Christianity.

Its Proto-Slavic character can be deduced from language contacts of Alpine Slavs with the remainders of the Romanised aboriginal population, later also with Bavarians.

Boleslav had also helped Otto to crush an uprising of Slavs on the Lower Elbe in 953.

The Nazis also considered some percentages of young Slavs like some Poles, some Czechs and some Belarusians to be sufficient subjects for Germanisation.

Knaanic ( also called Canaanic, Leshon Knaan, Judaeo-Czech, or Judaeo-Slavic ) is an extinct West Slavic Jewish language, formerly spoken in the lands of the Western Slavs, notably the Czech lands, but also the lands of modern Poland, Lusatia and other Sorbian regions.

The Slavs of Great Moravia ( present-day Slovakia and Moravia ), Hungary, Slovenia and Slavonia were called Slověne at that time, which gives rise to the name Slovenish for the alphabet.

In the 13th century there was indeed a people called Wends or Vends living as far as northern Latvia around the city of Wenden and it is not known if they were indeed Slavs as their name suggests.

Between the upper Sava and the Soča rivers lived the Carni, and towards the end of the sixth century Slavs settled the region called by Latin writers Carnia, or Carniola meaning ' little Carnia ', i. e. part of greater Carnia.

Gobineau's basic concept, as further refined and developed in Nazism, places the black Aboriginal Australians and " African savages " at the bottom of the hierarchy, while the white Northern and Western European Aryans ( consisting of Germans, Finnish, Swedish, Icelanders, Norwegians, Danish, British, French, Northern Italians, Irish and Dutch ) were at the top ; white olive-skinned Southern Europeans ( consisting of the Spanish, Southern Italians, Greeks and Portuguese, i. e. those of what is called the Mediterranean race, which was regarded as another subrace of the Caucasian race ) in the upper middle ranks ; Slavs ( Even though the Slavs are white and of Indo-European ancestry, the Nazis placed them lower on the scale because they were regarded as primarily of the Alpine race rather than the Nordic race, and thus fit only to be peasants.

In the 11th century Polabian Slavs founded a settlement at the Warnow river called Roztoc ( which means broadening of a river ); the name Rostock is derived from that designation.

The area was named after the Slavs who settled there and called themselves * Slověne.

On account of the frequent inroads of the Slavs, the residence of the Bishop of Zeitz was removed to Naumburg in 1028, after which the See was called Naumburg-Zeitz.

The Greeks have no feast of this kind, but the Ruthenians, followed by all the Slavs of the Greek Rite, have a feast, called Patrocinii sanctissimæ Dominæ etc., or Pokrov Bogorodicy, fixed on 1 October, which, however, would seem to correspond more with the Catholic Feast of the Scapular.

Carantanians (; ) were a Slavic people of the Early Middle Ages ( Latin:, or " Slavs called Caranthanians ").

In the 9th century CE, the city marked the easternmost settlement of the East Slavs in the land of the Finno-Ugric people called Muromians.

Pirin raises to the south-the mountain that Slavs called " Mountain of Gods " ( Perun ).

Up to the 14th century, ancestors of the modern Russians ( who likewise called themselves ruskiye ) spoke dialects of the Old East Slavic language, related to the dialects of other East Slavs.

The word askold or oskold is derived from Old Norse óskyldr meaning strange, so there was probably a ruler Kiev called Dir by the Slavs and the Varangians called him something like " óskyldr Dyri "— stranger Dir.
