The Strumica Carnival ( Macedonian: Струмички Карневал, translated Strumichki Karneval ) has been held since at least 1670, when the Turkish author Evlija Chelebija wrote while staying there, " I came into a town located in the foothills of a high hillock and what I saw that night was masked people running house – to – house, with laughter, scream and song.

" The Carnival has taken place in an organized form since 1991 ; in 1994, Strumica became a member of FECC and in 1998 hosted the XVIII International Congress of Carnival Cities.

The eastern frontier of Serbia was drawn from the summit of Patarika, on the old frontier, and followed the watershed between the Vardar and the Struma rivers to the Greek-Bulgarian boundary, except that the upper valley of the Strumica remained in the possession of Bulgaria.

The German army pushed through the south of Yugoslavia, taking the important city of Strumica and then carrying on southward towards the Grecian border, where they made contact with the 19th Motorised Infantry ( Greece ) in the area of Lake Dojran and on 9 April the Division took the city of Salonika.

The regional unit borders on Thessaloniki to the southwest, Kilkis to the west, the Republic of Macedonia with the district of Strumica to the northwest, the Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria to the north, Drama to the northeast and Kavala to the east.

Following the Berlin Congress of 1878, when Turkey lost a sizable portion of its territory on the Balkans, including Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro, a stream of refugees flowed into Macedonia – some of them ending up in Strumica.

The Greek armies, stationed in Strumica, were revolted by the decision for withdrawal and set the town on fire.

In the Second World War Strumica was captured by the German army on 6th April 1941 and, by means of the agreement for alliance with Bulgaria, Strumica was turned over under occupation of the Bulgarian armies on 18th April 1941.

On 11th September 1944 the Bulgarian army was expelled from Strumica and on 5th November 1944, the town was left by the German army.

In Macedonia, mastika has traditionally been made in the Strumica area ; the best known Macedonian brand, Strumička mastika (" Mastika of Strumica "), made by the company Grozd in since 1953, contains 43 % alcohol and is produced exclusively at export quality.

According to archeological research, the beginning of continuous life in Strumica dates back to 6th millennium B. C., a fact proved by the neolith settlement Stranata near the village Angelci, as well as by the findings from the Czar ’ s Towers site nearby Strumica, where traces of a prehistoric culture which existed from the late a neolith until early bronze age ( early 4th to mid 3rd millennium B. C.

The most popular Carnivals in the Republic of Macedonia are held in Vevčani and Strumica.

In the First Balkan War of 1912 the Turks were defeated by the joint effort of the Balkan allies Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Montenegro, and driven out of Macedonia, including Strumica.
