The Trans-Siberian Railway reached the city in 1900 causing an explosion in growth.

Omsk is an important railroad hub, and is the junction point for the northern and southern branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The new boom began with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the 1890s, which caused merchants to flock to the city in order to take advantage of the rail-to-river junction.

However, when the Trans-Siberian Railway bypassed the city in favor of the village of Novonikolayevsk ( now Novosibirsk ), development began to move south to connect with the railway.
