Waugh was also responsible for expanding the number of buildings on the island – creating the now ruined village of Maryland ( named after Waugh's wife ), as well as adding a new gatehouse and tower in the Tudor style.

There is a fine Tudor brick gatehouse built by Cardinal John Morton in 1495.

He demolished the south range and refectory and built a new one with a central turreted gatehouse to provide the appropriate seigneurial emphasis needed for a classic Tudor courtyard house.

However, the popular support for the proper Tudor dynasty – even a Catholic member – overruled Northumberland's plans, and Jane, who had never wanted to accept the crown, was deposed after just nine days.
