The Western European Union ( WEU ; French: Union de l ' Europe occidentale, UEO ) was an international organisation tasked with implementing the Modified Treaty of Brussels ( 1954 ), an amended version of the original 1948 Treaty of Brussels.

The WEU was established by seven Western European nations during the Cold War.

On 30 June 2011 the WEU was officially declared defunct.

The WEU was headquartered in Brussels, with a staff of 65 and an annual budget of € 13. 4 million.

It was composed of the Council of the WEU ( the Council ) and the Assembly of the WEU ( the Assembly ).

The Assembly of WEU was a consultative institution.

There was also the Western European Union ( WEU ), which was a European security organisation related to the EU.

Elements of the WEU were merged into the EU's CFSP and the President of the WEU was also the High Representative.

From 25 November 1999 he was also appointed Secretary-General of Western European Union ( WEU ), overseeing the transfer of responsibilities from that organisation to the CFSP.

In 2008 Bob Walter was elected President of the European Security and Defence Assembly, formerly the Assembly of the Western European Union ( WEU ). He held that post until the WEU was wound up and the legal basis for the Assembly, the " modified " Brussels Treaty ended in June 2011.

A former member of the Royal Air Force ( RAF ), he spoke frequently in debates on defence and from 1979-90 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of The Western European Union ( WEU ).

The operation was conducted in coordination with the WEU Operation Sharp Fence.

EUSC was set up in 2002 to replace the Western Union Satellite Centre and thus represents a part of the transfer of functions from the Western European Union ( WEU ) to the European Union ( EU ), and more specifically to the Common Foreign and Security Policy ( CFSP ).

Recent creation of the European Defence Agency made the WEU obsolete, furthermore the WEU was intended to act for 50 years and today is a relic of the past.

In 2010 the merger led to the final dissolution of the WEU ( 30 June 2011 ).

Lisbon also led to the termination of the Western European Union in 2010 as, with the solidarity clause ( deemed to supersede the WEU's military mutual defence clause ) and the expansion of the CSDP, the WEU became redundant.

These tasks were later transferred from the WEU to the EU by the Amsterdam Treaty ; they formed part of the new CFSP and the Common Security and Defence Policy.

In the Paris Agreements of 23 October 1954, France offered to establish an independent " Saarland ", under the auspices of the Western European Union ( WEU ), but a referendum held on 23 October 1955 rejected this plan by 67. 7 % to 32. 3 % ( out of a 96. 5 % turnout: 423, 434 against, 201, 975 for ) despite the public support of West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer for the plan.

On 15 May 1995, the Council of Ministers of the WEU met in Lisbon.

They were defined in June 1992 at the Hotel Petersberg, near Bonn in Germany, at a meeting of the Council of the WEU, where the member states agreed to deploy their troops and resources from across the whole spectrum of the military under the authority of the WEU.

The WEU itself had no standing army but depended on cooperation between its members.

Since January 1993, the WEU has been headquartered in Brussels.
