The true alligators are today represented to two species, A. mississippiensis in the southeastern United States, which can grow to 4. 24 m ( 14 ft ) and weigh 1000 lbs ( 454. 5 kg ) and the small A. sinensis in the Yangtze River, People's Republic of China, which grows to an average of 1. 5 m ( 5 ft ).

The longest cable-stayed bridge is the Sutong Bridge over the Yangtze River in China.

Chinese civilization originated in various regional centers along both the Yellow River and the Yangtze River valleys in the Neolithic era, but the Yellow River is said to be the cradle of Chinese civilization.

The Zhou initially moved their capital west to an area near modern Xi ' an, on the Wei River, a tributary of the Yellow River, but they would preside over a series of expansions into the Yangtze River valley.

Taking advantage of civil war in the Jin Dynasty, the contemporary non-Han Chinese ( Wu Hu ) ethnic groups controlled much of the country in the early 4th century and provoked large-scale Han Chinese migrations to south of the Yangtze River.

This included the use of gunpowder weapons, which played a large role in the Song Dynasty naval victories against the Jin in the Battle of Tangdao and Battle of Caishi on the Yangtze River in 1161.

It is especially popular in the lower reach of the Yangtze River.

One of the most serious and long-running water erosion problems worldwide is in the People's Republic of China, on the middle reaches of the Yellow River and the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

Investigations focused on wastewater discharges from two facilities in China ; one belonging to the Youngor Group located on the Yangtze River Delta and the other to Well Dyeing Factory Ltd. located on a tributary of the Pearl River Delta.

* 1997 – China announces it will spend US $ 27. 7 billion to fight erosion and pollution in the Yangtze and Yellow River valleys.

In China, it is grown mainly in the mountainous area upstream of the Yangtze River.

The main navigable rivers are the Heilong Jiang ; Yangtze River ; Xiang River, a short branch of the Yangtze ; Pearl River ; Huangpu River ; Lijiang River ; and Xi Jiang.

The Yangtze River ( Chang Jiang ) is the largest river flowing into the East China Sea.

The Gan River (, Gan: Kōm-kong ) of southern China travels 885 km north through Jiangxi before flowing into Lake Poyang and thence into the Yangtze River.

It shares its name with a stream flowing into the Yangtze River.

In Sichuan, the government aims to protect the 19. 23 million hectares of existing forest and plant an additional 2. 93 million hectares of new forest to diminish the amount of silt flowing into the Yangtze.

Shanghai sits on the Yangtze River Delta on China's eastern coast, and is roughly equidistant from Beijing and Hong Kong.

However, Chiang's influence never extended beyond the Yangtze Delta, and the rest of the country was under the effective control of former warlords, and Chiang faced insurrections from them throughout the 1930s, even after the Northern Expedition, which had nominally unified the country.

* July 31 – Captain Kerans of the HMS Amethyst decides to make a break after nightfall, under heavy fire from the Chinese People's Liberation Army on both sides of the Yangtze River, and successfully rejoins the fleet at Woosung the next day.

* 1161: the Song Dynasty Chinese navy, employing gunpowder bombs launched from trebuchets, defeats the enormous Jin Dynasty navy in the East China Sea in the Battle of Tangdao and on the Yangtze River in the Battle of Caishi.

** Yangtze River Floods: In China the Yangtze River breaks through the main bank ; before this, from August 1 – 5, peripheral levees collapsed consecutively in Jiayu County Baizhou Bay.

The Salween, Mekong, Yangtze and Huang He ( Yellow River ) all originate from parts of the Tibetan plateau that are geologically distinct from the Himalaya mountains, and are therefore not considered true Himalayan rivers.

They conducted a survey of the upper Yangtze River in the spring of 1945 and, disguised as coolies, conducted a detailed three-month survey of the Chinese coast from Shanghai to Kitchioh Wan, near Hong Kong.

In 588 CE, the Sui had amassed 518, 000 troops along the northern bank of the Yangtze River, stretching from Sichuan to the Pacific Ocean.

The canal ’ s central portions stretched from Yangzhou to Luoyang ; the section between the Yangtze and the Huai continued to the Shanyang River ; and the next section connected the Huai to the Yellow River and was called the Tongji Channel.

One of the greatest benefits of the canal system in the Tang Dynasty — and subsequent dynasties — was that it reduced the cost of shipping grain that had been collected in taxes from the Yangtze River Delta to northern China.

As the north shore of the Yangtze gradually silted up to create the sandbank island of Guazhou, it became necessary for boats crossing to and from the Jiangnan Canal to sail the long way around the eastern edge of that island.

After a particularly rough crossing of the Yangtze from Zhenjiang, the local prefect realised that a canal dug directly across Guazhou would slash the journey time and so make the crossing safer.

This southernmost section of the canal runs from Hangzhou in Zhejiang, where the canal connects with the Qiantang River, to Zhenjiang in Jiangsu, where it meets the Yangtze.

Additional amounts of water from the Yangtze will be drawn into the canal in Jiangdu City, where a giant pumping station was already built in the 1980s, and is then fed uphill by pumping stations along the route and through a tunnel under the Yellow River, from where it can flow downhill to reservoirs near Tianjin.

In 1170 the poet, politician and historian Lu You travelled upon the Grand Canal from Shaoxing to the river Yangtze, recording his progress in a diary.

A proposed South-North Water Transfer Project involves several schemes to divert water from the Yangtze River: one in the western headwaters of the rivers where they are closest to one another, another from the upper reaches of the Han River, and a third using the route of the old Grand Canal.

The protagonist in the story is Nell, a thete ( or person without a tribe ; equivalent to the lowest working class ) living in the Leased Territories, a lowland slum belt on the artificial, diamondoid island of New Chusan, located offshore from the mouth of the Yangtze River, northwest of Shanghai.

The lake region extends from the Pangong Tso Lake in Ladakh, Lake Rakshastal, Yamdrok Lake and Lake Manasarovar near the source of the Indus River, to the sources of the Salween, the Mekong and the Yangtze.

Both in 1129 – 30 and in 1161 Jin forces were defeated by the Southern Song navies when trying to cross the Yangtze River into the core Southern Song territory ( see Battle of Tangdao and Battle of Caishi ), even though for the latter campaign the Jin had equipped a large navy of their own, using Chinese shipbuildiers and even Chinese captains who had defected from the Southern Song.

When Sun Ce was assassinated by the retainers of Xu Gong in 200, the eighteen-year-old Sun Quan inherited the lands southeast of the Yangtze River from his brother.

Ba included the land in eastern Sichuan along the Yangtze and some tributary streams, while Shu included today Chengdu, its surrounding plain and adjacent territories in western Sichuan.

To the northeast was a well-established trade trail to Yibin in Sichuan province on the Yangtze River.

Meanwhile, in an offensive action against the Song Dynasty, Mongol armies captured Siyang-yang, the Yangtze and Sichuan, but did not secure their control over the conquered sites.

Coupled up with the subsequent barbarian invasions, this led to large-scale population and economic shifts from the North China Plain to the lower Yangtze and Sichuan Basin.

The city is situated on the Nanming River, a headstream of the Wu River, which eventually joins the Yangtze River at Fuling in Sichuan province.

To the east and southeast the plateau gives way to the forested gorge and ridge geography of the mountainous headwaters of the Salween, Mekong, and Yangtze rivers in western Sichuan ( the Hengduan Mountains ) and southwest Qinghai.

Yibin (; Sichuanese Pinyin: ȵi < sup > 2 </ sup > bin < sup > 1 </ sup >; Sichuanese pronunciation: ; ) is a prefecture-level city in the southeastern part of Sichuan province, People's Republic of China, located at the junction of the Min and Yangtze Rivers.

The Yuan name is most populous as a percentage of local populations in the Yangtze Delta region, in northwestern Jiangxi and in the border region between Shaanxi and Sichuan.

In southern China, laurel forest once extended throughout the Yangtze Valley and Sichuan Basin from the East China Sea to the Tibetan Plateau.

The Sichuan Basin consists of low hills and alluvial plains, and several major rivers flow into the Chang Jiang ( Yangtze River ), which passes through the southern part of the basin.

Ya ' an is located at the western edge of the Sichuan Basin and on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, covering the transition between the Chengdu Plain and the Tibetan Plateau.

In 135BC, under the expansionist Emperor Wu of Han, general Tang Meng, attempting an indirect approach to the Kingdom of Nanyue, made a push south of the Yangtze River and a little later Sima Xiangru pushed into the hill country west of Sichuan.
