In his encyclical Dilectissima Nobis ( 1933 ), in which he addressed the situation of the Church in Republican Spain, he proclaimed, that the Church is not " bound to one form of government more than to another, provided the Divine rights of God and of Christian consciences are safe ", and specifically referred to " various civil institutions, be they monarchic or republican, aristocratic or democratic ".

Pius IX's 1864 encyclical specifically marks for condemnation that:

Pope Pius XII's encyclical of 1950, Humani Generis, was the first encyclical to specifically refer to evolution, and took up a neutral position, again concentrating on human evolution:

Inter Mirifica is thought to have overturned a previous Church position that was critical of the liberty of the press, a position that is found in the 1832 encyclical Mirari Vos, which condemned press freedom because of the likelihood that some media content could be " poisonous " to the public.

However, in 1937, Pope Pius XI issued an encyclical written in German, Mit brennender Sorge ( With Burning Anxiety ), in which he criticized Nazism, listed breaches of the Concordat signed between Germany and the Church in 1933, and condemned antisemitism.

On the other hand, he also condemned European nationalism that was rampant in the 1920s and asked for European Unification in his 1920 encyclical Pacem Dei Munus.

On 15 August 1832, the Pope, without naming them, condemned their ideas in the encyclical Mirari Vos, most notably their demands for freedom of conscience and freedom of the press.

While staying in Munich, Lamennais received the 1832 encyclical Mirari vos, which condemned religious pluralism in general and certain of Lamennais's ideas advanced in L ' Avenir without mentioning his name.

Before the Second Vatican Council, Rahner had worked alongside Yves Congar, Henri de Lubac and Marie-Dominique Chenu, theologians associated with an emerging school of thought called the Nouvelle Théologie, elements of which had been condemned in the encyclical Humani Generis of Pope Pius XII.

Pope Leo XIII ( 1810 – 1903 ) condemned secular biblical scholarship in his encyclical Providentissimus Deus ; but in 1943 Pope Pius XII gave license to the new scholarship in his encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu: " extual criticism ... quite rightly employed in the case of the Sacred Books ... Let the interpreter then, with all care and without neglecting any light derived from recent research, endeavor to determine the peculiar character and circumstances of the sacred writer, the age in which he lived, the sources written or oral to which he had recourse and the forms of expression he employed.

The encyclical condemned particularly the paganism of the national-socialism ideology, the myth of race and blood, and the fallacy of their conception of God.

Catholic holocaust scholar Michael Phayer concludes that the encyclical " condemned racism ( but not Hitler or National Socialism, as some have erroneously asserted )".

They were received in audience, but after they had left Rome, the 1832 encyclical Mirari vos condemned religious pluralism in general and certain of Lamennais's ideas advanced in L ' Avenir without mentioning his name.

Its foundations are widely considered to have been laid by Pope Leo XIII's 1891 encyclical letter Rerum Novarum, which advocated economic Distributism and condemned both Capitalism and Socialism, although its roots can be traced to the writings of Catholic thinkers such as St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine of Hippo, and is also derived from concepts present in the Bible.

" Pope Pius XI condemned the Spanish Government's deprivation of the privileges of Catholics in the encyclical Dilectissima Nobis ( On Oppression Of The Church Of Spain ).

This view, mixed in with philosophical currents such as vitalism, immanentism and historicism, was at the heart of the modernist controversy during the papacy of Pius X, and was condemned in the encyclical Pascendi.

In his encyclical Mystici Corporis, 103 Pope Pius XII said thatthose who do not belong to the visible Body of the Catholic Church … We ask each and every one of them to correspond to the interior movements of grace, and to seek to withdraw from that state in which they cannot be secure about their salvation. Pius IX, Iam Vos Omnes, 13 Sept. 1868 For even though by an unconscious desire and longing have a certain relationship with the Mystical Body of the Redeemer, they still remain deprived of those many heavenly gifts and helps which can only be enjoyed in the Catholic Church.

:" In his encyclical Humani Generis ( 1950 ), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points .... Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis.

Mortalium Animos was a papal encyclical promulgated in 1928 by Pope Pius XI on the subject of religious unity, condemning certain presumptions of the early ecumenical movement.

Bulgaria's shift towards the Papacy infuriated Patriarch Photios who wrote an encyclical to the eastern clergy in 867, in which he denounced the practices associated with the western rite and Rome's ecclesiastical intervention in Bulgaria.

The 47 questions by the six scholars were grouped into three parts: ( a ) 27 specific questions on existing documents, mostly asking for background and additional information such as drafts of the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge, which was largely written by Eugenio Pacelli.

However, the designation ' encyclical ' does not always denote such a degree of significance.

In 2010, Patriarch Bartholomew I issued an encyclical lauding the ongoing dialogue between the Orthodox Church and other Christian churches and criticizing those who are “ unacceptably fanatical ” in challenging such dialogue.

The same holds for the official texts of canon law, and for all other doctrinal and pastoral communications and directives of the Holy See ( and the Holy Father ), such as encyclical letters, motu propriae, and declarations ex cathedra.

The year 1907 was a crucial one for a young Roman Catholic who longed to become a writer, especially one whose idols had been poets such as Richard Dehmel and Frank Wedekind ; for it was in 1907 that Pope Pius X issued the encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis bitterly condemning modernism in the arts.

Indeed, Distributism in Catholic social teaching such as Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum and Pope Pius XI's Quadragesimo Anno resembles a Mutualist society based on Cooperatives, while Pope John Paul II's Catechism of the Catholic Church states " She ( the Church ) has ... refused to accept, in the practice of " capitalism ," individualism and the absolute primacy of the law of the marketplace over human labor.

Nevertheless, official theological statements such encyclical letters constitute part of the theology of Pope Benedict XVI.

* By forbidding members to attend college without good cause, Schuckardt asserts that he was conforming to the teachings contained in an encyclical of Pope Pius XI, which states: " Catholic children may not attend non-Catholic, neutral, or mixed schools ... and it pertains exclusively to the Ordinary of the place to decide ... under what circumstances and with what precautions against the danger of perversion, attendance at such schools may be tolerated.

The publication has seen occasional controversy, such as its dispute with The Wanderer over Humanae Vitae, Paul VI's encyclical on birth control.

In the tradition of Marian visitations, the " conversion of sinners " is not necessarily religious conversion to the Roman Catholic Church, for that would be the " conversion of heretics or apostates who are ' outside the church and alien to the Christian Faith ' according to Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical on the Unity of the Church, Satis Cognitum ".

This was the third and last encyclical published by Pius XI making reference to the religious situation in Mexico.

He was also deeply religious, relying on " Rerum Novarum ", the papal encyclical of Pope Leo XIII supporting the right of workers to form unions, as the bridge between his faith and his commitment to the rights of workers.

In response to the disarray of religious educational institutions Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Aeterni Patris of 4 Aug. 1879 called for the renewal of Christian philosophy and particularly for the study of the doctrines of Aquinas: " We exhort you, venerable brethren, in all earnestness to restore the golden wisdom of St. Thomas, and to spread it far and wide for the defense and beauty of the Catholic faith, for the good of society, and for the advantage of all the sciences.

Until this encyclical of Pius XII, Church was considered as societas perfecta, a perfect society, consisting primarily of Pope, bishops, clergy and the religious.

Edith Stein wrote to Pius XI in April 1933 asking if he would issue an anti-anti-Semitism encyclical in view of " the indifference of Catholics to the growing vexations against the Jews.

" The attempt by some twentieth-century Catholic theologians to present the Eucharistic change as an alteration of significance ( transignification rather than transubstantiation ) was rejected by Pope Paul VI in his 1965 encyclical letter Mysterium fidei In his 1968 Credo of the People of God, he reiterated that any theological explanation of the doctrine must hold to the twofold claim that, after the consecration, 1 ) Christ's body and blood are really present ; and 2 ) bread and wine are really absent ; and this presence and absence is real and not merely something in the mind of the believer.

Most notably, early in 1937, Pacelli asked several German cardinals, including Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber to help him write a protest of Nazi violations of the Reichskonkordat ; this was to become Pius XI's 1937 encyclical, Mit brennender Sorge.

Pius was particularly devoted to Mary ; his encyclical Ad Diem Illum expresses his desire through Mary to renew all things in Christ, which he had defined as his motto in his first encyclical.

For most of its existence, the People's Party has explicitly defined itself as Catholic and anti-socialist ; the ideal of subsidiarity as defined by the encyclical Quadragesimo Anno is generally considered one of the historical cornerstones of its agenda.

The archbishop opened the conference with an address: deliberation followed ; committees were appointed to report on special questions ; resolutions were adopted, and an encyclical letter was addressed to the faithful of the Anglican Communion.

For the modern Catholic Church a Papal encyclical, in the strictest sense, is a letter, usually treating some aspect of Catholic doctrine, sent by the Pope and addressed either to the Catholic bishops of a particular area or, more normally, to the bishops of the world ; however, the form of the address can vary widely, and often designates a wider audience.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term " subsidiarity " in English follows the " German usage Subsidiarität ( 1809 or earlier in legal use ; 1931 in the context of Catholic social doctrine, in § 80 of Rundschreiben über die gesellschaftliche Ordnung, the German version of Pope Pius XI's encyclical Quadragesimo Anno ( 1931 ))".

Against this background to the encyclical, Faulhaber suggested in an internal Church memorandum that the bishops should inform the Nazi regime “ that the Church, through the application of its marriage laws, has made and continues to make, an important contribution to the state ’ s policy of racial purity ; and is thus performing a valuable service for the regime ’ s population policy .”

In April 1906, Pope Pius X issued the encyclical Tribus circiter which criticized Feliksa Kozłowska ; and her followers were criticized harshly as well for treating her as a living saint and the equal to the Blessed Virgin.

As much of the driving force at the early organizing of the MST came from Catholic base communities, much of the MST ideology and actual practice are rooted on the principle, taken from the social doctrine of the Catholic Church, that private property should serve a social function-a principle developed during the 19th century, and made into Catholic official doctrine since Pope Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum encyclical ; on the eve of the 1964 military coup, that was the principle evoked by President João Goulart in his famous " Central rally " ( a mammoth rally held in Rio de Janeiro, near to the city's greatest railroad station, where the president made a speech offering a blueprint for various political and social reforms ) when proposing the expropriation of estates of more than 600 hectares in area situated at the vicinity of federal facilities ( roads, railroads and reservatoirs as well as sanitation works )- a move that triggered the strong conservative resistance leading to Goulart's downfall.

In the encyclical Longinqua oceani ( 1895 ; “ Wide Expanse of the Ocean ”), Leo indicated a generally positive view of the American Church, commenting mostly on the success of Catholicism in the US but also noting the view that the Church " would bring forth more abundant fruits if, in addition to liberty, she enjoyed the favor of the laws and the patronage of the public authority.

Other literary and political figures fought the encyclical vigorously ; Carossa neither complied nor complained.

The theological basis for the adoration was prepared in the 11th century by Pope Gregory VII, who was instrumental in affirming the tenet that Christ is present in the Blessed Host ; In 1965 the confession of belief that Gregory imposed on Berengarius was quoted in Pope Paul VI's historic encyclical Mysterium Fidei:
