Exceptions were made in 1990 for municipalities that fell within 10 miles of the New Hampshire or Vermont border.

The island had 22 municipalities until March 1970, of which 6 were market cities and 16 parish municipalities.

The market city municipalities were supervised by the county and not by the interior ministry as was the case in the rest of Denmark.

Boroughs and cities were collectively known as municipalities, and were enclaves separate from their surrounding counties.

In 1920, the five neighbouring municipalities of Woensel ( to the north ), Tongelre ( northeast and east ), Stratum ( southeast ), Gestel en Blaarthem ( southwest ) and Strijp ( west ), which already bore the brunt of the housing needs and related problems, were incorporated into the new Groot-Eindhoven (" Greater Eindhoven ") municipality.

Regional districts were first created across British Columbia in 1966 – 1967 to form bodies for inter-municipal coordination and to extend municipal-level powers to areas outside existing municipalities.

There were 3, 168 municipalities in 2005.

After the census in 2001, there were 58 municipalities across the country.

* In Macedonia, 84 municipalities ( opštini ; singular: opština ) were established in 2004, reduced from 123 created in 1996.

Even though in the 1960s, a couple ( of more than two thousand ) municipalities were governed by opposition parties, the first state government to be won by an opposition party was Baja California, in 1989.

Later on, with “ Regio Decreto n. 1913 of the sept. 2, year 1923, the municipalities of “ Calice al Cornoviglio ” and “ Rocchetta Vara ” were detached from the province, in order to make them to enter in the new province of La Spezia.

In same period ( R. D n. 2490 of November 9 year 1923 ) the 17 Municipalities of the “ Circondario ” Castelnuovo Garfagnana were removed them also all that were assigned to the province of Lucca in order to compensate it of the passage to the new province of Pistoia of all the municipalities of the Val di Nievole.

By 1963 telephone wire had been laid from Beijing to the capitals of all provinces, autonomous regions, and large cities, while in turn, provincial capitals and autonomous regions were connected to the administrative seats of the counties, smaller municipalities and larger market towns.

In the 16th century two more municipalities were established, Coamo ( 1570 ) and San Germán ( 1570 ).

The municipalities merged in the course of the latest municipal reform of the 1970s are also called Stadtbezirke ( quarters or districts ), and are Ortschaften (“ settlements ”) in terms of Baden-Württemberg ’ s Gemeindeordnung ( municipal code ), which means, each of them has its own council elected by its respective residents ( Ortschaftsrat ) and is presided by a spokesperson ( Ortsvorsteher ).

Bornholm Regional Municipality was not merged with other municipalities on 1 January 2007 as the result of the nationwide Kommunalreformen (" The Municipal Reform " of 2007 ), which is quite understandable, since the island, as can be seen on maps, is quite far from the rest of Denmark.

On 27 May 1949, the People's Liberation Army took control of Shanghai, which was one of only three former Republic of China ( ROC ) municipalities not merged into neighboring provinces over the next decade ( the others being Beijing and Tianjin ).

* On 1 January 2004 the municipalities De Lier ,'s-Gravenzande, Monster, Naaldwijk and Wateringen were merged into a new municipality Westland, and Maasland and Schipluiden to another one, Midden-Delfland.

The centralized city of Winnipeg was merged with all of its suburbs ( 12 other communities and municipalities ), more than doubling its population.

In 2003, Bornholm County merged with the local four municipalities, forming the Bornholm Regional Municipality.

On 1 January 1964, a major municipal merger took place: the neighbouring municipalities of Leinstrand ( population: 4, 193 ), Byneset ( population: 2, 049 ), Strinda ( population: 44, 600 ), and Tiller ( population: 3, 595 ) were all merged with the city of Trondheim ( population: 56, 982 ), which just about doubled the population of the municipality.

In 1962, the municipalities of Le Châtelard and Les Planches merged, while Veytaux remained independent.

After Novi Sad merged six of its municipalities into one Novi Sad municipality, the municipality of Sremski Karlovci held a referendum to separate from Novi Sad, and established a separate municipality independent from Novi Sad.

The rural municipalities of Borge, Onsøy, Kråkerøy, and Rolvsøy were merged with Fredrikstad on 1 January 1994.

By contrast, in other municipalities, the sheriff's office may be merged with most or all city-level police departments within a county to form a consolidated city-county or metropolitan police force responsible for general law enforcement anywhere in the county.

As part of the 2000 – 2006 municipal reorganization in Quebec, the five municipalities that constituted the Communauté urbaine de l ' Outaouais were merged on January 1, 2002 to constitute the new city of Gatineau.

In Belgium, the capital, Brussels, is administratively one of the federation's three regions, and is the only city subdivided, without the other regions ' provincial level, into 19 rather small municipalities, which each have an elected — formally appointed — Burgomaster ( i. e., Mayor, responsible to his / her elected council ); while Antwerp, the other major metropolitan area, has one large city ( where the boroughs, former municipalities merged into it, elect a lower level, albeit with very limited competence ) and several smaller surrounding municipalities, each under a normal Burgomaster as in Brussels.

Since 1 January 1997 the municipalities Roosendaal en Nispen and Wouw have merged into the municipality now simply known as Roosendaal.

In 1923, the municipalities of Stad Ommen and Ambt Ommen were once again merged.

In 2011, the municipality merged with the municipalities of Bolsward, Nijefurd, Sneek and Wûnseradiel to form Súdwest Fryslân.

In 1991, the municipalities of Montfort, Posterholt, Reutje and Sint Odiliënberg merged.

In 2001, the ( now former ) municipalities of Belfeld and Tegelen were merged into the municipality of Venlo.

The former municipalities of Bredevoort ( 1818 ) and Dinxperlo ( 2005 ) have been merged with Aalten.

On January 1, 2005 the municipality Eibergen merged with the municipalities of Neede, Borculo and Ruurlo into the municipality of Berkelland.
