Coleoptera () is an order of insects commonly called beetles.

The superficial consistency of most beetles ' morphology, in particular their possession of elytra, has long suggested that the Coleoptera are monophyletic, but there is growing evidence that this is unjustified, there being arguments for example, in favour of allocating the current suborder Adephaga their own order, or very likely even more than one.

Though limited mainly to the insect order Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera parasitoids make up as much as 10 % of all insect species.

Most insects can easily be recognized to order such as Hymenoptera ( bees, wasps, and ants ) or Coleoptera ( beetles ).

This very energetic man, colonel of the General Staff, owner of a huge collection and author of numerous works on systematics of beetles and some on other insects suggested that he would identify and bring into order the Coleoptera collection.

He was the joint editor, with Carl Gustav Jablonsky, of Naturgeschichte der in-und ausländischen Insekten ( 1785 – 1806, 10 volumes ), which was one of the first attempts at a complete survey of the order Coleoptera.

Note that the classification that appears in Volume 1, pp. 10-13, is superseded by a number of changes that appeared in Volume 2 ( the relegation of the families Monommatidae, Colydiidae, and Bruchidae to subfamily status, and the revised spelling of Ripiphoridae ), and these changes have been incorporated into the List of subgroups of the order Coleoptera.

Lautner, for his part, `` belonged to the present-day race of small artists, who do not demand the utmost of themselves '', and the bitter description of the type includes such epithets as `` wretched little poseurs '', the devastating indictment `` they do not know how to be wretched decently and in order '', and the somewhat extreme prophecy, so far not fulfilled: `` They will be destroyed ''.

Authorities disagree as to whether Salientia is a superorder that includes the order Anura, or whether Anura is a sub-order of the order Salientia.
