Saint Ignatius's most famous quotation, however, comes from his letter to the Romans:

There is considerable evidence, however, that attests to the existence of the references to Jesus in Josephus well before then, including a number of ad hoc copies of Josephus ' work preserved in quotation from the works of Christian writers.

Formerly, when a word or phrase in quotation marks came at the end of a phrase or clause that ended with a semicolon, the semicolon would be put before the trailing quotation mark ; now, however, the magazine follows the more commonly observed style and puts the semicolon after the second quotation mark.

The proverb was apparently based on an anecdote about Ibycus stupidly or nobly turning down an opportunity to become tyrant of Rhegium in order to pursue a poetic career instead ( one modern scholar however infers from his poetry that Ibycus was in fact wise enough to avoid the lure of supreme power, citing as an example Plato's quotation from one of his lyrics: " I am afraid it may be in exchange for some sin before the gods that I get honour from men ") There is no other information about Ibycus ' activities in the West, apart from an account by Himerius, that he fell from his chariot while travelling between Catana and Himera and injured his hand badly enough to give up playing the lyre " for some considerable time.

This speech is indicated, similar to Death's, ""; however, unlike those of her grandfather, the words which Susan speaks in this voice are often ( if not always ) enclosed within quotation marks, particularly in Hogfather.

Frequently, however, these sinuous movements are brutally punctuated by a very simple documentary shot, like a quotation written in everyday language ".

Many historians assert, however, that the famous four words never were actually uttered by Durocher ; the quotation as it is remembered actually came from headline writers distilling Durocher's quote that " The nice guys are all over there, in seventh place, not in this dugout " into a pithy soundbite.

The quotation appears at the end of the song when the old French soldier dies.

Early on, this vocabulary of refined behaviour began to work its way into English: the word ' debonaire ' appears in the 1137 Peterborough Chronicle ; so too does ' castel ' ( castle ) which appears in the above Biblical quotation, another import of the Normans, who made their mark on the English language as much as on the territory of England itself.

It appears in his book The Sufis as a quotation from A History of Secret Societies by Arkon Daraul ( a probable pseudonym of Shah ).

The quotation often appears with the last sentence omitted, making Watson's position appear more radical than it actually was.

SGML markup languages whose concrete syntax enables the SHORTTAG VALUE feature, do not require attribute values containing only alphanumeric characters to be enclosed within quotation marks — either double ( LIT ) or single ( LITA )— so that the previous markup example could be written:

However, usage differs from this in German, where an upper-case letter may be used only if the sentence after the colon could stand alone without the preceding sentence ( otherwise one may judge freely according to the relative independence of the two assertions ), and in Dutch, where an upper-case letter must be used if the colon is followed by a quotation or an enumeration of complete sentences, although in all other cases a lower-case letter should be used.
