However recently, rugby union has rapidly increased in popularity in the small island nation.

The town of Narromine has produced several success stories, most recently sports personalities Glenn McGrath ( Australian cricket team: Fast bowler ), Melinda Gainsford-Taylor ( Sprinter: Commonwealth games medalist ), Disney animator Adam Phillips and Justin Smith ( rugby league: North Queensland Cowboys ).

It has recently forged links with New Zealand rugby fraternities due to the fact the first All-Black captain, Dave Gallaher was born in Ramelton, a village eight miles ( 13 km ) from Letterkenny.

The town's sport scene is dominated by local rugby league club, Featherstone Rovers, who have won the Challenge Cup on three occasions most recently on 7 May 1983 and won the League Championship in 1976-77.

The Sydney Institute of Sport is based in Narrabeen and has recently become the headquarters of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles rugby league club.

The Japan national rugby union team ( often known as the Cherry Blossoms or more recently the Brave Blossoms ) represent Japan in international rugby union competitions.

The primary sports played by the school are rugby union, field hockey and cricket, however association football as well as samoan cricket have both recently been introduced as an ' official ' school sport and looks set to challenge the more established sports over the coming years.

Nowadays David acts as the co-commentator for BBC Scotland's coverage of rugby union matches, most recently in the 2007 Summer Tests before the 2007 Rugby World Cup, a tournament that STV owned the rights to.
