Several Frenchmen living in " a dozen huts " abandoned Diego Garcia when the British East India Company attempted to establish a settlement there in April 1786.

On Diego Garcia, the main plantations were located at East Point, the main settlement on the eastern rim of the atoll ; Minni Minni, north of East Point ; and Pointe Marianne, on the western rim, all located on the lagoon side of the atoll rim.

Elihu Yale ( April 5, 1649 – July 8, 1721 ) was an American merchant and philanthropist, governor of the East India Company settlement at Madras and a benefactor of the Collegiate School of Connecticut, which in 1718 was named Yale College in his honor.

For 20 years, Yale was part of the British East India Company, and he became the second governor of a settlement at Madras ( now Chennai ), India, in 1687, after Streynsham Master.

East Gosford was the first centre of settlement.
