He continued to write humorous verse, stories and plays, including the comic operas Our Island Home ( 1870 ) and A Sensation Novel ( 1871 ), and the blank verse comedies The Princess ( 1870 ), The Palace of Truth ( 1870 ), and Pygmalion and Galatea.

Besides light verse he wrote comedies, fables and, among other novels, Les Sacrifices de lamour, ou lettres de la vicomtesse de Senanges et du chevalier de Versenay ( 1771 ).

Of his numerous other plays, the majority by c. 1910 were neglected ; but a few had obtained an established place in the repertory of the German theatre, especially the comedies Zopf und Schwert ( 1844 ), Das Urbild des Tartüffe ( 1847 ), Der Königsleutnant ( 1849 ) and the blank verse tragedy, Uriel Acosta ( 1847 ).

He was a successful journalist and later, after distinguished military service, a leading lyricist for operettas and musical comedies, but he is now best remembered as a writer of humorous verse in a style of grotesquerie and black humour.

In collaboration with a teacher, also a Jesuit, Father Luis de Lozada ( 1681-1748 ), he wrote La juventud triunfante ( Triumphant Youth ) ( Salamanca, 1727 ), a description in prose and verse, interspersed with four comedies by unnamed authors, on feasts celebrated, in recognition of the canonization of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and St. Stanislaus Kostka.

After inheriting his mother's considerable fortune in 1693, he devoted the time divided between his hôtel in Paris and his country house, the château of Grillon, near Dourdan, to writing comedies in verse for the Comédie française, twenty-three in total, the best of them being Le Joueur (" The Gamester ", 1696 ), Le Distrait ( 1697 ), Les Menechmes and his masterwork, Le Légataire universelle (" The residuary legatee ", 1706 ), following closely in the steps of Molière.

Florian's first literary efforts were comedies ; his verse epistle Voltaire et le serf du Mont Jura and an eclogue Ruth were crowned by the French Academy in 1782 and 1784 respectively.
