One modern historian feels that it was Ealdred who was behind the compilation of the D version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and gives a date in the 1050s as its composition.

The account of Ælfheah's death appears in the E version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle:

The 12th century chronicler Henry of Huntingdon produced an enhanced version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle that included 514 as the date of Ælle's death, but this is not secure.

The death of Eadwine, Ealdorman of Sussex, is recorded in 982, because he was buried at Abingdon Abbey in Berkshire, where one version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was compiled.

Ultimately Anglo-Saxon England was defeated by the cavalry of the Normans at the Battle of Hastings, and some Tolkien scholars have speculated that the Rohirrim are Tolkien's wishful version of an Anglo-Saxon society that retained a " rider culture ", and would have been able to resist such an invasion.

Whether there is any validity in the story of the huge Viking who stood his ground on a bridge against the might of Harold Godwinson's army we will never know, but the fact is that a bridge was mentioned in both Manuscript C of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and again in its extended 12th century version.

In 1830 Thorpe brought out at Copenhagen an English version of Rask's Anglo-Saxon Grammar ( a second edition of this appeared at London.

Next came, for the Ælfric Society, The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church ,’ with an English version, published in ten parts between 1843 and 1846.

The earliest version of this story appeared more than a century after Eudocia's death in the " World Chronicle of John Malalas, an author who did not always distinguish between authentic history and a popular memory of events infused with folk-tale motifs.

In contrast to Zuckerman's version, the Primary Chronicle and the later Kiev Chronicle place Oleg's grave in Kiev, where it could be seen at the time when these documents were compiled.
