Captain George Vancouver ( 22 June 1757 – 10 May 1798 ) was an English officer of the British Royal Navy, best known for his 1791-95 expedition, which explored and charted North America's northwestern Pacific Coast regions, including the coasts of contemporary Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.

As of 1980, this region was little explored and largely unmapped, and the expedition was unable to reach Lake Tele.

After Mendoza returned unexpectedly to Spain, two other members of the expedition -- Juan de Salazar de Espinosa and Gonzalo de Mendoza -- explored the Río Paraguay and met up with Irala.

In 1804 Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as leaders of the expedition ( 1804 – 1806 ), which explored the Louisiana Territory and beyond, producing a wealth of scientific and geographical knowledge, and ultimately contributing to the European-American settlement of the West.

John Paul Jones became notorious in Britain for his expedition from France in the little sloop of war Ranger in April 1778, during which, in addition to his attacks on merchant shipping, he made two landings on British soil.
