The slums were cleared during redevelopment in the 1960s and 1970s when the Westway Flyover and Trellick Tower were built.

In recent years, some council or ex-council high-rises in the United Kingdom, including Trellick Tower, Keeling House, Sivill House and The Barbican Estate, have become popular with young professionals due to their excellent views, desirable locations and architectural pedigrees, and now command high prices.

The Trellick Tower

By the late 1970s Trellick Tower had a very poor reputation for crime ( rapes in lifts and staircases, children attacked by drug addicts ) and anti-social behaviour, and many tenants resisted a transfer there.

Other, more successful, manifestations of the Unité include Chamberlin, Powell and Bon's Barbican Estate ( completed 1982 ), Gordon Tait's Samuda Estate, Isle of Dogs ( 1965 ) and Ernő Goldfinger's Balfron Tower ( 1967 ) and Trellick Tower ( 1972 ), all in London.

Two blocks west of the Old Town is the Kuchlbauer Brewery and beer garden featuring the Kuchlbauer Tower, a colorful and unconventional observation tower designed by Viennese architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
