Francisco Moniz was a nobleman from the Algarve, who married Filipa da Câmara ( daughter of Garcia Rodrigues da Câmara ) who was one of the sons of João Gonçalves Zarco, the leader who discovered Porto Santo ( 1418 ) with Tristão Vaz Teixeira and later the island of Madeira with Bartolomeu Perestrelo ( 1419 ).

He died in a plane crash, together with his wife Maria Manuel Simões Vaz da Silva Pires, the Prime Minister Francisco de Sá Carneiro and Sá Carneiro's partner, Snu Abecassis, while heading to Porto to take part in a rally for the Portuguese presidential election, 1981.

The archipelago consists of five islands and several rocks and stacks ; Trindade is the largest island, with an area of 10. 1 km² ( 3. 9 sq mi ); about 49 km ( 30 miles ) east of it are the tiny Martim Vaz islets, with a total area of 0. 3 km² ( 30 hectares ).

The Trindade and Martim Vaz Islands were discovered in 1502 by Portuguese navigators led by Estêvão da Gama, and, along with Brazil, became part of the Portuguese Empire.

Together with his fellow fleet commanders, Tristão Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, he started the colonization of the islands in 1425.

Tristão Vaz Teixeira ( c. 1395 – 1480 ) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer who, together with João Gonçalves Zarco and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, was the official discoverer and one of the first settlers of the archipelago of Madeira ( 1419 – 1420 ).

Vaz met Filkin on 20 March to discuss a complaint that the Hinduja Foundation had given £ 1, 200 to Mapesbury Communications, a company run by his wife, in return for helping to organise a Hinduja-sponsored reception at the House of Commons.

She had three brothers, Baltasar Vaz Alcoforado, Miguel da Cunha Alcoforado and Francisco da Cunha Alcoforado and two sisters Ana Maria da Cunha Alcoforado, wife of Rui de Melo Lobo Freire, and Maria Peregrina Alcoforado.

He married Maria Manuel Simões Vaz da Silva Pires ( August 26, 1946 – Loures, Camarate, December 4, 1980 ), daughter of Gustavo Correia Barata da Silva Pires and wife Maria Manuela da Silva Casaleiro Simões Vaz, without issue.

) They had issue including, Filipa de Mendonça who married João Teixeira, son of Tristão Vaz Teixeira, First Captain of Machico, Madeira, Catarina Furtado Mendonça who married Mem Rodrigues de Vasconcelos, Knight of Prince Fernando's Household and Judge for the City of Funchal, and Izeu Perestrelo, wife of Pedro Correia da Cunha, First Captain of Graciosa Island in the Azores and one of King John II's twenty-five bodyguards.

The Gruta dos Encharéus ( an enormous coastal grotto 50 meters long by 25 wide ), the Gruta do Galo, the islets of Maria Vaz, Cartário, Abrões, Muda, Pão de Açúcar and Furado, as well as the plains of Ponta Delgada, Moinho and Vermelha, among others, are natural symbols of the coast of this municipality.

On either coast of the village are two islets, Maria Vaz ( on the west coast ) and João Martins, both named after important settlers during early colonization.

Pêro Vaz de Caminha was the son of Vasco Fernandes de Caminha, a knight of the household of the Duke of Guimarães ( later Braganza ).

In 1418 two of the captains of Prince Henry the Navigator, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, were driven by a storm to an island which they called Porto Santo (" Holy Port ") in gratitude for their rescue from the shipwreck.

She said that Vaz had made inquiries about when a decision on their application for citizenship could be expected.

On the same day, Vaz told reporters that they would " regret " their behaviour once the facts of the case were revealed.

Some claim the origin of the concept Brazilian hairless privates date back to a letter written by Pêro Vaz de Caminha documenting Pedro Álvares Cabral's voyage to Brazil in 1500 AD, which says: "... suas vergonhas tão altas e tão çarradinhas e tão limpas das cabeleiras que de as nós muito bem olharmos não tínhamos nenhuma vergonha " ( English translation: " their private parts were so exposed, so healthy and so hairless, that looking upon them we felt no shame ").

Clemenza Doria married twice ; her second husband was Fernão Vaz da Costa ( c. 1520 – 1567 ), son of Portuguese Chief Justice Cristóvão da Costa and a great-grandson of the legendary navigator Soeiro da Costa ; they originated the Costa Doria family which is still thriving today as one of their members, José Carlos Aleluia Costa Doria, is a representative in the Brazilian congress, and businessman João Doria Jr. or João Agripino da Costa Doria III held a cabinet-level position in the José Sarney administration in Brazil ( 1985 – 1989 ).

In the 19th century they gathered rubber, and participated in the slave trade, sending both their own and acquisitions from further inland to Loango and Fernan Vaz.
