Even in October 1739 Vernon had sent his first Lieutenant Percival along with two Spanish Fraternity on the ship, with the excuse to deliver a letter to Blas de Lezo and another who at that time was the governor of Cartagena, Don Pedro Hidalgo.

So, again with the aim of probing the Spanish defenses of that city, on March 7, 1740 Vernon left Port Royal in command of two fire-ships, three bombards and a steamer, reaching waters of Cartagena on March 13.

Having not seen any reaction from the Spanish, the 18th Vernon bombards ordered three open fire on the city, with the intention of provoking a response that he might get an idea of the defensive capacity of the Spanish.

After the destruction of Portobelo in November last year, Vernon proceeded to remove the last Spanish stronghold in the area, attacking the fortress of San Lorenzo el Real Chagres, on the banks of the Chagres River and near Portobelo.

At 3 pm on March 22, 1740, an English fleet composed of ships Strafford, Norwich, Falmouth and Princess Louisa, the Diamond frigate, the bombards Alderney, Terrible and Cumberland, the fireships Success and Eleanor, and transport Goodly and Pompey, under command of Vernon himself, began to bombard the Spanish fortress.
