The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod ( LCMS ) and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ), the second and third largest Lutheran bodies in the United States and the two largest Confessional Lutheran bodies in North America, do not have a bishop as the head of the church or middle jurisdiction, practicing a form of congregationalism similar to the United Church of Christ.

The LCMS is distinguished from the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ) by three main theological beliefs:

Additionally, some LCMS congregations are somewhat more tolerant of the charismatic movement than the WELS ; some of the more prominent charismatic Lutheran congregations are members of the LCMS.

The ELCA is less conservative than the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod ( LCMS ) or Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ), the second and third largest Lutheran bodies in the United States respectively.

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ) is a North American Confessional Lutheran denomination of Christianity.

WELS is in fellowship with the Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( ELS ), a smaller denomination based in south-central Minnesota, and is a member of the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference ( CELC ), a worldwide organization of Lutheran church bodies.

WELS and ELS are independent Lutheran denominations and are not part of the ELCA, which is structured to have " synods " within the denomination.

Dissatisfaction over this decision led about 70 pastors and a similar number of congregations to leave the WELS, ELS, and LCMS to form the Church of the Lutheran Confession ( CLC ).

In 1993 the ELS and WELS, working with a number of other Lutheran synods around the world — some of which had been founded through mission work by both synods — founded a new fellowship organization which is the theological successor of the Synodical Conference: the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference ( CELC ).

An elementary school is operated by St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church ( WELS ).

The CLC was created primarily ( though not solely ) from churches that broke away from the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ) and Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( ELS ) over a disagreement over the application of the principles of Christian fellowship ( in this context, an agreement of a unity of belief ).

Luther Preparatory School ( LPS or Luther Prep ), established in 1995, is a residential four-year secondary school located in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA and is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod ( WELS ).

In 1878, the WELS reopened a seminary of their own in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

It occupies the former combined campus of Northwestern College, a preministerial college established in 1865, and Northwestern Preparatory School ( NPS ), a high school, both run by the WELS.

Cox Patent, an area within the township of TDR2 WELS, is also in Central Aroostook.

The WELS does not.

The WELS believes that the Ministry of the Word is divinely established and that congregations and the synod may choose the forms of public ministry they wish to use.

# The role of women in the church: Although both the LCMS and WELS agree that Scripture reserves the pastoral office for men, the WELS also believes that Scripture forbids women's suffrage in the congregation.

This is in concord with most moderate Protestant bodies and in contrast to the LCMS and WELS, which practice the historical-grammatical method of biblical interpretation.

Thus, the term " synod " as used by the ELCA refers to middle level administrative districts in different regions of the United States ( example: Illinois Synod of the ELCA ), whereas in the case of LCMS, WELS, and ELS, " synod " refers to the entire church body.

From 1926 – 29, a small group of persons and congregations were expelled or voluntarily left the WELS in an incident known as the " Protes ' tant Controversy.

Two years later the WELS publicly recognized the same doctrinal disagreements with the LCMS, but rather than break fellowship, decided to " admonish " the LCMS to return to its former practice.

Their chief complaint was that the WELS misapplied the principles of Christian fellowship by not breaking immediately with the Synodical Conference and the LCMS after it had publicly recognized doctrinal disagreements.

While the WELS broke fellowship with the LCMS in 1961, the CLC and the WELS remain at odds regarding this issue to this day.

As the main campus of WELS ( Western English Language Centre ) is located on South Road in Braybrook, many refugees and immigrants, mainly from East Africa and Vietnam have settled in and around Braybrook.

Other conservative Lutherans, however, may favor High Church Lutheranism which remains generally favorable to the traditional doctrine of Apostolic Succession ( see above ).

Other Christians too, in particular Anglicans, Lutherans and some Protestant and other Christian communities use a rite of anointing the sick, without necessarily classifying it as a sacrament.

Other Protestant Christian denominations also engage in monasticism, particularly Lutherans in Europe and North America.

Other traditional Lutherans reject such practices as unbiblical, with a minority of congregations continuing the historic practice of male suffrage, similar to the Wisconsin Synod.

Other confessional Lutherans include the Church of the Lutheran Confession ( CLC ), the American Association of Lutheran Churches ( AALC ), the Concordia Lutheran Conference, the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America ( ELDoNA ), member congregations of the Protes ' tant Conference, member congregations of the Orthodox Lutheran Confessional Conference of Independent Congregations ( OLCC ), member congregations of the United Lutheran Mission Association ( ULMA ) and Evangelical Lutheran Conference & Ministerium of North America ( ELCM ) ( all of North America ).

Other LCA congregants look on this more positively though, feeling that " The LWF will help us become more conscious of the social implications of the gospel and provide opportunities to work in partnership with other Lutherans in addressing questions of international significance.

Other Lutheran bodies and synods that have dioceses and bishops include the Church of Denmark, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, the Evangelical Church in Germany ( partially ), and the Church of Norway.

Other churches on the island are the Roman Catholic's Church of the Ascension, the Beach United Methodist Church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and the Beach Baptist Church.

Other churches include Catholic, Church of the Nazarene, Christian, Lutheran, Wesleyan, Baptist, and Presbyterian.

Other churches include St. George Greek Orthodox, Bloomfield Hills Baptist, Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church ( ELCA ) on Adamds Road ( Bloomfield Township ), Detroit Michigan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Birmingham Unitarian Church on Woodward Avenue.

( Other area churches include Gran Lutheran Church, Hawley Alliance Church, Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley United Methodist Church, Hegland Lutheran Church, Lysne Lutheran Church, Our Savior ’ s Lutheran Church, Rollag Lutheran Church, Solem Lutheran Church, and St. Andrew ’ s Catholic Church ).

Other early Christian radio programs broadcast nationwide in the U. S. beginning in the 1920s – 1930s include ( years of radio broadcast shown ): Bob Jones, Sr. ( 1927 – 1962 ), Ralph W. Sockman ( 1928 – 1962 ), G. E. Lowman ( 1930 – 1965 ), The Lutheran Hour ( 1930 – present ), and Charles E. Fuller ( 1937 – 1968 ).

On April 26, 1847, twelve pastors representing 14 German Lutheran congregations met in Chicago, Illinois, and founded a new church body, the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and Other States.

Other Churches, including the Lutheran Church and the Episcopal Church, commemorate these two martyrs on 7 March, never having altered the date to 6 March.

Other churches include the Old Believers " Svētā Nikolaja " ( St. Nicholas ), Russian Orthodox " Vissvētākās Dievdzemdētājas piedzimšanas ", Lutheran " Svētās Trīsvienības " ( Holy Trinity ), as well as a Baptist church.

Other institutions, such as the state Lutheran church, have followed suit, marching and making speeches.

In 1892, the Wisconsin Synod had federated with the Michigan and Minnesota synods to form the General Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Other States.

In 1917 the synods voted to turn their federation into a formal union, known as the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States.

Other religious buildings include churches from Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Seventh Day Adventist, Uniting, and Wesleyan denominations, along with a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall.

Other faiths are active in Chubut, principally amongst the Welsh chapels as well as Lutheran and Muslim places of worship in Comodoro.

Other Lutheran churches include the Kinki Evangelical Lutheran Church, the West Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Japan Lutheran Brethren Church, the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Fellowship Deaconry Evangelical Church ( Marburger Mission ).
