* In Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir Double Indemnity, the character of Mr. Jackson, played by Porter Hall, is from Medford, Oregon, but mentions Corvallis in this line to Walter Neff ( Fred MacMurray ): " It's the name!

In 1944, he played the role of Walter Neff, an insurance salesman ( numerous other actors had turned the role down ) who plots with a greedy wife Barbara Stanwyck to murder her husband in Double Indemnity ( 1944 ).

When Marlowe ( Bogart, from The Big Sleep ) calls, Rigby questions him about Walter Neff, the ship's owner, and learns that Neff cruises supermarkets looking for blondes.

His partner, Sergeant Dawkins replies, " You haven't read any Walter Scott in years!

As the movie closes, in a voiceover discussion in which his therapist ( Michael Shannon ) tells him that eventual forgiveness may take several years, Walter replies that he understands and that he accepts her anger.
