* April 26 – The Whydah Gally, flagship of " Black Sam " Bellamy, is wrecked in a storm off Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

Wellfleet is a New England town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States and is located halfway between the " tip " and " elbow " of Cape Cod.

The name " Wellfleet " is disputed ; some argue that it comes from " Whale Fleet ," after the burgeoning whaling industry in the town, while some say it comes from a brand of oyster popular in England at the time, in order to help sales.

In 1717, the pirate Samuel Bellamy was sailing near what is now Wellfleet when his ship, the Whydah sank off shore.

Wellfleet is bordered by Truro to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Eastham to the south, and Cape Cod Bay to the west.

Wellfleet is approximately fourteen miles south of Provincetown, thirty-three miles ( by road ) northeast of Barnstable, forty-eight miles from the Sagamore Bridge, and one hundred miles ( by road ) southeast of Boston.

A small whaling community was founded on the land that is now Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and was originally known as Silver Spring, after Silver Spring Brook.

This land is now protected by the Massachusetts Audubon Society in its Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary.

There is currently limited bus service between Wellfleet and Hyannis, and from there on to Boston and Logan Airport, on the Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Company, a Plymouth-based bus service.

Wellfleet is represented in the Massachusetts House of Representatives as a part of the Fourth Barnstable district, which includes ( with the exception of Brewster ) all the towns east and north of Harwich on the Cape.

Wellfleet is patrolled by the Second ( Yarmouth ) Barracks of Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police.

On the national level, Wellfleet is a part of Massachusetts's 10th congressional district, and is currently represented by Bill Keating.

Wellfleet is governed by the open town meeting form of government and a board of selectmen, who employ a town administrator to oversee day-to-day business.

The Wellfleet Public Library is located in the town center, in a former curtain and candle factory converted in 1989.

Wellfleet Elementary School is located just off of Route 6 near the town center, and serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Eastham is also bordered by the towns of Wellfleet and Orleans on its northern and southern sides, respectively.

Truro is located just south and east of the " tip " of Cape Cod, and is bordered by Provincetown to the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, Wellfleet to the south, and Cape Cod Bay to the west.

Brewster is a member of the Nauset Regional School District, along with the towns of Eastham, Orleans and Wellfleet.

Originally settled in the 1650s by the Europeans as Billingsgate ( after the famous fish market in East London ), Wellfleet was part of neighboring Eastham until 1763, achieving town status after nearly 30 years of petitioning.

The new area was led by Allison Mankin and Scott Bradner, and had a directorate with 15 engineers from diverse backgrounds for direction-setting and preliminary document review: The working-group members were J. Wellfleet was encountered by Europeans as early as 1606, when the French explorer Samuel de Champlain explored and named it " Port Aux Huitres " ( Oyster Port ) for the bountiful oyster population resident to the area.

The South Wellfleet station's first call sign was " CC ", for Cape Cod.

At about the same time, Cabletron's main competitor, SynOptics Communications, introduced a Layer 3 router for their 3000-series hubs that was developed in partnership with Wellfleet Communications, whom they subsequently acquired.

The combined company was renamed Bay Networks as a nod to the legacy that SynOptics was based in the San Francisco area and Wellfleet was based in the Boston area, two cities well known for their bays.

SynOptics headquarters at the time of the merger with Wellfleet was in the pair of strikingly-designed sloped buildings at the Northeast corner of the intersection of California's Great America Parkway and Mission College Blvd in Santa Clara, an area known for featuring numerous networking start-ups such as Ungermann-Bass.

At one time, Wellfleet Harbor included an island known as Billingsgate Island, which sat at the harbor's mouth, to the south of the point.

The CCRTA, which runs between Hyannis and Provincetown, also makes stops in Wellfleet.

The Billingsgate shoals are split between Wellfleet and neighboring Eastham.

There are no private schools in Wellfleet ; high school students may, however, choose to attend Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich free of charge.

The original lands included what are now the towns of Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and a small portion of Chatham.

He died of a heart attack in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on October 4, 1968.
