The Sub-Roman or Post-Roman history of Dumnonia comes from a variety of sources and is considered exceedingly difficult to interpret given that historical fact, legend and confused pseudo-history are compounded by a variety of sources in Middle Welsh and Latin.

In Welsh legend, Arthur's sword is known as Caledfwlch.

The 9th-century Historia Brittonum also refers to this tale, with the boar there named Troy ( n ) t. Finally, Arthur is mentioned numerous times in the Welsh Triads, a collection of short summaries of Welsh tradition and legend which are classified into groups of three linked characters or episodes in order to assist recall.

Scholars such as Rosalind Clark hold that the names are unrelated, the Welsh " Morgan " ( Wales being the source of Arthurian legend ) being derived from root words associated with the sea, while the Irish " Morrígan " has its roots either in a word for " terror " or a word for " greatness ".

Welsh legend states that when Wales is threatened again he will rise from his unknown resting place in order to lead the defence of Wales, quite like the legend of King Arthur.

According to legend, the king had promised the Welsh that he would name " a prince born in Wales, who did not speak a word of English " and then produced his infant son to their surprise ( and presumable chagrin ).

However, the story may well be apocryphal, as it can only be traced to the 16th century, and, in the time of Edward I, the English aristocracy spoke Norman French, not English ( some versions of the legend include lack of knowledge in both languages as a requirement, and one reported version has the very specific phrase " born on Welsh soil and speaking no other language ").

Welsh legend provides a mythic story that says he did exactly that.

Caradog, son of Bran, who appears in medieval Welsh literature, has also been identified with Caratacus, although nothing in the medieval legend corresponds except his name.

Geoffrey of Monmouth presents this legend to explain the Welsh name for Brittany, Llydaw, as originating from lled-taw or half-silent.

The prominent place of Macsen in history, Welsh legend and in the Matter of Britain means he is often a character or referred to in historical and Arthurian fiction.

Very little historical information about Dark Age Welsh court tradition survives, but the Middle Welsh material came to be the nucleus of the Matter of Britain and Arthurian legend as they developed from the 13th century.

Gilfaethwy is a minor character in Welsh legend, and may have been used in the Fourth Branch simply to advance the story of his more illustrious brother Gwydion.

In Welsh medieval legend, Ceridwen ( ), also spelled Cerridwen, was an enchantress, mother of Morfran and a beautiful daughter Creirwy.

As a famous king of the past, Maelgwn's name figures strongly in Welsh legend.

There is nothing to connect the historical Taliesin with Maelgwn Gwynedd, although references to the legend are found in medieval Welsh poems.

In legend and medieval Welsh poetry, he is often referred to as Taliesin Ben Beirdd (" Taliesin, Chief of Bards " or chief of poets ).

Gwalchmei was a traditional hero of Welsh legend whose popularity greatly increased after foreign versions, particularly those derived from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, became known in Wales.

The similarity with South Welsh ' raths ' and Cornish ' rounds ' suggests a degree of cultural interaction between Western British and Irish populations, however differences in dates of occupation mean this cannot be confirmed.

It supports multiple languages including English, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Slovak, Spanish, Chinese ( Traditional and Simplified ), Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, Danish, Polish, Indonesian, Catalan, Welsh, Thai, Turkish, and Hebrew.

In recent years the IRFU discussed whether they should be closed down as a means of cost saving, as has happened to the Scottish super district Caledonia Reds and the Welsh region Celtic Warriors, and more recently Border Reivers.

This similarly happened to a Welsh man on 4 July 2011.

It is speculated that Langport is the place mentioned in old Welsh sources as " Llongborth " = " Ship-port ", where the Battle of Llongborth happened.

As administrator of the Diocese of Hereford, he was involved in fighting against the Welsh, suffering two defeats at the hands of raiders before securing a settlement with Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, a Welsh ruler.

Ealdred's expedition was betrayed by some Welsh soldiers who were serving with the English, and Ealdred was defeated.

The king again employed Ealdred as a diplomat in 1056, when he assisted earls Harold and Leofgar in negotiations with the Welsh.

This story was later retold with more detail by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his fictionalized Historia Regum Britanniae, conflating the personage of Ambrosius with the Welsh tradition of Merlin the visionary, known for oracular utterances that foretold the coming victories of the native Celtic inhabitants of Britain over the Saxons and the Normans.
