They were strays of every kind -- university students and journalists, Village hangers-on and barflies, taxi drivers and editors and unknown poets, as well as friends like Elinor Wylie and William Rose Benet, the Van Dorens and Nathan, Rebecca West and Hugh Walpole and Osbert Sitwell, Laurence Stallings, Lewis Browne, William Seabrook, Arthur Hopkins, the Woodwards.

The town included a much larger area than the present city, with various outlying parts becoming independent towns over the years: Newton ( originally Cambridge Village, then Newtown ) in 1688, Lexington ( Cambridge Farms ) in 1712, and both West Cambridge ( originally Menotomy ) and Brighton ( Little Cambridge ) in 1807.

The West Village is the area of Greenwich Village west of 7th Avenue, though realtors claim the dividing line is farther east at 6th Avenue.

The Far West Village is a sub-neighborhood from the Hudson River to Hudson Street.

Greenwich Village was allowed to keep the 18th century street pattern of what is now the West Village: areas west of the 18th century Greenwich Lane ( now Greenwich Avenue ) and the early 20th century Sixth Avenue, which were already built up when the plan was implemented, resulting in a neighborhood whose streets are dramatically different, in layout, from the ordered structure of newer parts of town.

For example, West 4th Street, which runs east-west outside of the Village, turns and runs north, causing it to intersect with West 10th, 11th, 12th, and ending at West 13th Street.

The Village ( and surrounding New York City ) would later play central roles in the writings of, among others, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Marianne Moore, Maya Angelou, Rod McKuen, and Dylan Thomas, who collapsed at the Chelsea Hotel and died at St. Vincents Hospital at 170 West 12th Street, in the Village after drinking at the White Horse Tavern on November 5, 1953.

The developer then sought a new site, quickly settling on a similar development in Kansas City, Kansas, known as Village West, near CommunityAmerica Ballpark and Kansas Speedway.

In September 2009, the developer asked Wyandotte County and Kansas state officials for permission to use revenues from existing tax increment financing in the Village West area to help finance the soccer complex.

Also at the start of 2000, Lewinsky moved to New York City, living in the West Village and becoming an A-list guest in the Manhattan social scene.

The West German Olympic Organizing Committee had encouraged an open and friendly atmosphere in the Olympic Village, to help erase memories of the militaristic image of wartime Germany and, specifically, of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which had been exploited by Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler for propaganda purposes.

Desmond reportedly owned a Baldwin grand piano, which he loaned to Bradley Cunningham, owner of the famous Bradley's piano bar in Greenwich Village, with the condition that Mr. Cunningham had to move the large piano back to Desmond's Upper West Side apartment to become part of Desmond's estate.

A Pop-up shop opened in New York City's West Village from 28 March to 7 April 2007.

The first phase of residential development occurred in the summer of 1996 with Celebration Village, West Village and Lake Evalyn ; this was followed by the North Village, South Village, East Village and Aquila Reserve and the final Artisan Park phases.

Additionally, the Downtown Alliance provides a free bus service that runs along North End Avenue and South End Avenue, connecting the various residential complexes with subway stations on the other side of West Street.

Downtown Kansas City is an area of bounded by the Missouri River to the north, 31st Street to the south, Troost Avenue to the East, and State Line road to the West.

The University Park campus is in the West Adams district of South Los Angeles, southwest of Downtown Los Angeles.

Chinatown, Toronto is an ethnic enclave in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with a high concentration of ethnic Chinese residents and businesses extending along Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue.

Among the sites considered within Seattle were Duwamish Head in West Seattle ; Fort Lawton ( now Discovery Park ) in the Magnolia neighborhood ; and First Hill — even closer to Downtown than the site finally selected, but far more densely developed.

West of Downtown, across the Chenango River, lies the Westside.

The modern era of the NCAA began in July 1952 when its executive director, Kansas City, Missouri native Walter Byers, moved the organization's headquarters from the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago ( where its offices were shared by the headquarters of the Big Ten Conference ) to the Fairmount Building at 101 West 11th Street in Downtown Kansas City.

The area now referred to as " Downtown ", between South and North Streets, and bordered by River Street and Wilkes-Barre Boulevard to the West and East respectively is the original foundation of Wilkes-Barre, the 16 blocks claimed by the Connecticut settlers who founded the city.

Oscoda consists of several neighborhoods, including Piety Hill, Hull Island, Brewster Park, Silver Sands, Lakewood Shores West, Lakewood Shores East, Jordanville, the Villages of Oscoda, Riverbend Pointe and the thriving Downtown Business District.

Kitsap County is connected to the eastern shore of Puget Sound by Washington State Ferries routes, including the Seattle-Bremerton Ferry, Southworth to West Seattle via Vashon Island, Bainbridge Island to Downtown Seattle, and from Kingston to Edmonds, Washington.

Downtown Kernville has an Old West look and contains a number of restaurants, antique shops and motels.

West Puente Valley is an unincorporated community located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, between Downtown Los Angeles and Pomona.

South of Downtown Pecatonica, On West 1st street you will find Sumner Park which has 3 baseball diamonds, 4 tennis quarts, 2 basketball quarts, horseshoe pits, and children's playgrounds.

On January 26, 2012, West Construction Services began the renovation and restoration of the former Sears building in downtown Pontiac for the Lafayette Place Lofts, the largest construction investment in Downtown Pontiac in approximately 30 years.

Among these are North End ( once known as " Atlanticville "), Branchport, Beachfront North and South ( including Pier Village, adjacent to the site of the former Long Branch Pier at the foot of Laird Street ), Downtown, Uptown, West End and Elberon.
