Gerrard Winstanley, who was part of the radical Diggers movement in England, wrote in his 1649 pamphlet, The New Law of Righteousness, that there " shall be no buying or selling, no fairs nor markets, but the whole earth shall be a common treasury for every man ," and " there shall be none Lord over others, but every one shall be a Lord of himself.

The concept of wage slavery could conceivably be traced back to pre-capitalist figures like Gerrard Winstanley from the radical Christian Diggers movement in England, who wrote in his 1649 pamphlet, The New Law of Righteousness, that there " shall be no buying or selling, no fairs nor markets, but the whole earth shall be a common treasury for every man ," and " there shall be none Lord over others, but every one shall be a Lord of himself.

Whereas Coke, John Pym, Lucy Hutchinson and Sir Henry Vane saw Magna Carta rights as being primarily those of the propertied classes, during the prolonged 17th-century constitutional crisis in England and Scotland, the arguments were also taken up in a more radical way by the likes of Francis Trigge, John Hare, John Lilburne, John Warr and Gerrard Winstanley of the radical Diggers even calling for an end to primogeniture and for the cultivation of the soil in common.

Winstanley took as his basic texts the Biblical sacred history, with its affirmation that all men were descended from a common stock, and with its scepticism about the rulership of kings, voiced in the Books of Samuel ; and the New Testament's affirmations that God was no respecter of persons, that there were no masters or slaves, Jews or Gentiles, male or female, under the New Covenant.

In late March 1650, four emissaries from the Surrey colony were arrested in Buckinghamshire bearing a letter signed by the Surrey Diggers including Gerrard Winstanley and Robert Coster inciting people to start Digger colonies and to provide money for the Surrey Diggers.

In Germany its foremost spokesman during the Peasant Wars was Thomas Muenzer ; in England, Gerrard Winstanley, a leading participant in the Digger movement.

During construction, a French privateer took Winstanley prisoner, causing Louis XIV to order his release with the words " France is at war with England, not with humanity ".

Bertrand Russell, in his History of Western Philosophy, writes that the Anabaptists " repudiated all law, since they held that the good man will be guided at every moment by the Holy Spirit ... rom this premiss they arrive at communism ...." Prior to Leo Tolstoy, Christian anarchism found one of its most articulate exponents in Gerrard Winstanley, who was part of the Diggers movement in England during the English Civil War.

Two celebrated guerrilla gardeners, active prior to the coining of the term, were Gerrard Winstanley, of the Diggers in Surrey, England ( 1649 ), and John " Appleseed " Chapman in Ohio, USA ( 1801 ).

Led by Gerrard Winstanley, Diggers wanted an even more equal society than the Levellers.

These ranged from Royalists who wished to place King Charles II on the throne, to men like Oliver Cromwell, who wished to govern with a Parliament voted in by an electorate determined by property ownership, similar to that enfranchised before the civil war, to the Levellers, influenced by the writings of John Lilburne, who wanted parliamentary government based on an electorate constituted of every head of household ( normally though not necessarily male as was acknowledged in the Putney Debates ), through to other groups with smaller followings like the Fifth Monarchists, Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, the Ranters, and the Society of Friends ( Quakers ).

The communities failed, but a series of pamphlets by Winstanley survived, of which The New Law of Righteousness ( 1649 ) was the most important.

The concepts held by Muenzer and Winstanley were superbly attuned to the needs of their time — a historical period when the majority of the population lived in the countryside and when the most militant revolutionary forces came from an agrarian world.

Various libertarian socialist authors have identified the written work of English Protestant social reformer Gerrard Winstanley and the social activism of his group, the Diggers, as anticipating this line of thought.

There was one in Bagnigge Vale, London, the summer home of Nell Gwynn ( 1650 – 87 ), and Henry Winstanley ( 1644 – 1703 ), the designer of the Eddystone Lighthouse, is thought to have built one at his home in Saffron Walden, Essex.
