Witten attended the Park School of Baltimore ( class of ' 68 ), and received his Bachelor of Arts with a major in history and minor in linguistics from Brandeis University in 1971.

In the string theory conference at University of Southern California in the mid-1990s, Witten solved an outstanding problem of how five different versions of string theory were just the same theory which are related to one another by dualities.

Witten is married to Chiara Nappi, a professor of physics at Princeton University.

Although Witten coined the term M-theory to refer to his model of an eleven-dimensional universe, other scientists have generalized the moniker for application to any of various meta-theories involving string theory and brane cosmology.

One of the leading authorities continuing the search for a coherent TOE is Edward Witten, a theoretical physicist who formulated the groundbreaking M-theory, which is an attempt at describing the supersymmetrical based string theory.

Unable to afford the asking price, and concerned that, ostensibly because of the former private owner's tax concerns, Witten refused to reveal the provenance of the map, Yale contacted another alumnus, Paul Mellon, who agreed to buy it ( for a price later stated to be about $ 300, 000 ) and donate it to the university if it could be authenticated.
