Taking its name from the historic town of Greenwich, the London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich with part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich to the east.

It was formed in 1965 by merging the former areas of the metropolitan boroughs of Greenwich and most of Woolwich ( with the exception of North Woolwich, north of the river, which became part of the London Borough of Newham ).

Woolwich was formed by Royal Charter on March 7, 1767, from portions of Greenwich Township, and was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial 104 townships by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was formed in 1947 on the site of the former Royal Military College at Sandhurst from a merger between the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich ( which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939 ) and the Royal Military College ( 1802 to 1939 ).

The former North Woolwich branch included a section of single track between Custom House and North Woolwich stations, and the Broad Street branch was at one time formed of quadruple track.

The Royal Military Academy Woolwich closed in 1939 and in 1947 the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was formed on the site of the former Royal Military College at Sandhurst ( which had previously only trained officers for the Infantry and Cavalry ) with the objective of providing officer training for all arms and services.

In 1973 the provincial government restructured this layout: this formed the current cities of Kitchener ( which absorbed Doon ) and Waterloo ; the city of Cambridge was formed from Hespeler, Preston, Galt, and Blair ; as well as the townships of Wilmot, Wellesley, North Dumfries and of Woolwich, which grew to contain the northeast corner of the former Waterloo township.

Eltham was a civil parish of Kent until 1889 when it became part of the County of London and from 1900 formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich.

A small area on the Thames was historically part of the Woolwich parish of Kent and became part of the County of London in 1889 ; this formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich from 1899.

The Woolwich Equitable Building Society demutualised in 1997, giving up its mutual status to become a bank: Woolwich PLC was formed, giving shares to investing and borrowing members of the society, and listing on the London Stock Exchange.

' Charlton next Woolwich ' was an ancient parish in the county of Kent, which became part of the metropolitan area of London in 1855.

North Woolwich is an anomaly as it was part of the County of London but was transferred to Newham, an outer London borough, in 1965.

Administratively, North Woolwich was part of Kent at least since the Norman Conquest when one of William the Conqueror's lords, Hamon, was granted land on both sides of the Thames at this spot, probably to enable him to enjoy the taxes from cross-river traffic.
