In the club's early years its progress was hampered by the nearby presence of Woolwich Arsenal F. C.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was formed in 1947 on the site of the former Royal Military College at Sandhurst from a merger between the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich ( which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939 ) and the Royal Military College ( 1802 to 1939 ).

The former North Woolwich branch included a section of single track between Custom House and North Woolwich stations, and the Broad Street branch was at one time formed of quadruple track.

The Royal Military Academy Woolwich closed in 1939 and in 1947 the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was formed on the site of the former Royal Military College at Sandhurst ( which had previously only trained officers for the Infantry and Cavalry ) with the objective of providing officer training for all arms and services.

In 1973 the provincial government restructured this layout: this formed the current cities of Kitchener ( which absorbed Doon ) and Waterloo ; the city of Cambridge was formed from Hespeler, Preston, Galt, and Blair ; as well as the townships of Wilmot, Wellesley, North Dumfries and of Woolwich, which grew to contain the northeast corner of the former Waterloo township.

Eltham was a civil parish of Kent until 1889 when it became part of the County of London and from 1900 formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich.

A small area on the Thames was historically part of the Woolwich parish of Kent and became part of the County of London in 1889 ; this formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich from 1899.

The Woolwich Equitable Building Society demutualised in 1997, giving up its mutual status to become a bank: Woolwich PLC was formed, giving shares to investing and borrowing members of the society, and listing on the London Stock Exchange.

Thrown on his own resources he obtained employment from The Polygraphic Society, a Woolwich based company formed for the reproduction of pictures.

Woolwich Arsenal's move to North London in 1913 gave Charlton an opportunity to develop, and they became a senior side by joining the Lewisham League.

The 96 contracted by Transport for London runs between Woolwich and Bluewater Shopping Centre.

It was then cut in two by the building of the A2016 a 4 lane dual carriageway by-pass of the Woolwich to Erith section of the A206 though on leaving Woolwich only got as far as the industrial part of lower Belvedere ( the extension to Erith was opened in 1999 ).

It is notable as a river crossing point, having the Woolwich Ferry ( and the lesser-known Woolwich foot tunnel ) to North Woolwich, and as the one-time home of the Woolwich Building Society ( now owned by Barclays plc ).

Arsenal Football Club were founded in Woolwich in 1886 by workers at the Arsenal – the club were initially known as Dial Square, then Royal Arsenal and then became Woolwich Arsenal in 1891.

Many local residents felt that the destruction of Woolwich was under-reported by local and national media, and on Saturday 13 August local residents began writing their thoughts on the hoarding around the shell of the Great Harry.

It is located on the Greenwich Peninsula close to The O2 and can be reached from Woolwich by bus.

Woolwich is served by 18 Transport for London bus routes, including one dedicated night-only route and two 24-hour services.

Some locations are only served directly from Woolwich by the N1 and thus not served directly during the run of daytime routes-these include Aldwych, Holborn, Waterloo and Surrey Quays.
