Yeshayahu Leibowitz, noted professor of philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, claimed that " It is clear that the Zohar was written by de Leon as it is clear that Theodore Herzl wrote Medinat HaYehudim ( The Jewish State ).

In 1993, the strong reaction of then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin against the nomination of Yeshayahu Leibowitz led Leibowitz to decline the prize.

As against this, many ( e. g. Yeshayahu Leibowitz ) argue that Caro and the others were operating within the rigorous rules of halachic reasoning and that their conclusions were in no way affected or invalidated by their personal theological views ( just as, from the opposite perspective, Maimonides ' status as a halachic authority is not affected by his acceptance of Greek philosophy ).

Some Modern Orthodox thinkers of a mitnagged cast of thought, however, such as Yeshayahu Leibowitz, reject Zoharic Kabbalah and praise the work of Rabbi Yiḥyah Qafiḥ.

One American yeshiva named in his honor is the Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yisrael Meir HaKohen centered in Queens, New York founded by his great nephew, Rabbi Dovid Leibowitz, with several branches in the United States and Israel.

A witty anecdote serves to illustrate how the three of them differed in their approaches and relation to their teacher: it is said that had Reb Chaim said, " This table is a cow ," Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik would say that the table had the same Talmudic laws as a cow, Rabbi Shimon Shkop would say the molecules in a table could be rearranged into a cow, but Rabbi Boruch Ber Leibowitz would attempt to milk the table.

In 1908, Rabbi Leibowitz transferred to the Slabodka yeshiva, where he learned under the Alter of Slabodka, Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel.

In 1915, Rabbi Leibowitz succeeded his father-in-law as rabbi of Šalčininkai.

In 1926, Rabbi Leibowitz came to the United States as a fund-raiser for the kollel and was invited to become the first rosh yeshiva of Mesivta Torah Vodaath.

In 1933, Rabbi Leibowitz founded Yeshivas Rabbenu Yisrael Meir Hacohen, named after his great uncle.

On Friday December 5, 1941 Rabbi Dovid Leibowitz died of a massive heart attack.
