Pike County was named from general Zebulon Montgomery Pike of New Jersey, being one of the oldest counties, established on December 17, 1821.

Zebulon Montgomery Pike came through in 1805.

According to Joshua Coffin, the early settlers included " Captain John Pike, the ancestor of General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, who was killed at the battle of Queenstown in 1813 ; Thomas Bloomfield, the ancestor of Joseph Bloomfield, some years governor of New Jersey, for whom the township of Bloomfield, New Jersey is named ; John Bishop, senior and junior ; Jonathan Haynes ; Henry Jaques ; George March ; Stephen Kent ; Abraham Toppan, junior ; Elisha Ilsley ; Hugh March ; John Bloomfield ; Samuel Moore ; Nathaniel Webster ; John Ilsley ; and others.

Later explorers to document the falls include Jonathan Carver and Zebulon Montgomery Pike.

He wrote an account from memory of his expeditions, which was published in 1810 as The expeditions of Zebulon Montgomery Pike to Headwaters of the Mississippi River, through Louisiana Territory, and in New Spain, during the Years 1805-6-7 .< ref >

Lieutenant Zebulon Pike was the first official United States representative to explore the Upper Mississippi River which runs through the newly acquired land and present-day Davenport.

Reports from expeditions in 1806 by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike and in 1819 by Major Stephen Long described the Great Plains as " unfit for human habitation " and as " The Great American Desert ".

In 1806 Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, Major G. C. Sibley, Major S. H. Long, amongt others, began visiting the Pawnee villages.

Its name is in honor of General Zebulon Pike, of New Jersey, an explorer who led an expedition to southern Colorado and discovered Pikes Peak in 1806.

* Robert McKnight ( c. 1789-1846 ), born in Augusta County, moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1809, member of a trading expedition under Zebulon Pike to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1812, captured by Spanish and imprisoned until 1821, eventually renounced his United States citizenship, moved to Mexico, and became owner of the Santa Rita del Cobre copper mine in Chihuahua ( now New Mexico ).

Pike County was named for General Zebulon Pike.

Its county seat is Waverly and is named for explorer Zebulon Pike.

Pike County was organized on February 1, 1815, from portions of Scioto, Ross, and Adams Counties, and was named in honor of Zebulon Pike, the explorer and soldier who had recently been killed in the War of 1812.

The Kinston Indians relocated to Zebulon, North Carolina east of Raleigh next year to replace the AA level Carolina Mudcats and will adapt the " Mudcats " name.
