Roger Bonvin ( 12 September 1907, Icogne, Valais-5 June 1982 ) was a Swiss politician and member of the Swiss Federal Council for the Canton of Valais ( 1962-1973 ).

The Battle of Malta took place on 8 July 1283 in the entrance to the Grand Harbour, the principal harbor of Malta, when a galley fleet commanded by Roger of Lauria defeated a fleet of Angevin galleys commanded by William Cornut and Bartholomew Bonvin.

Cornut was killed by Roger in single combat when he boarded Roger's flagship, but Bonvin broke through the line with some galleys and escaped.

In 1976, the Parliament of Switzerland passed a bill for its construction, sponsored by Roger Bonvin, following an initial cost estimate of 76 million francs.

A plaque commemorating Roger Bonvin is installed as the base tunnel's entrance in Oberwald.
