It is thought that Shakespeare never read Gesta Danorum, and instead had access to an auxiliary version of the tale describing the downfall of the Prince of Denmark, whose real name-Amleth-was used in anagram by Shakespeare for Hamlet.

Saxo ’ s version, told of in Book 3 and 4, is very similar to that of Shakespeare ’ s Hamlet.

However, while Hamlet dies in Shakespeare's version just after his uncle's death, in Saxo's version Amleth survives and begins ruling his kingdom, going on to other adventures.

Consequently, there is no direct evidence that Kyd wrote it, nor any evidence that the play was not an early version of Hamlet by Shakespeare himself.

In the 1920s, James Joyce managed " a more upbeat version " of Hamlet — stripped of obsession and revenge — in Ulysses, though its main parallels are with Homer's Odyssey.

In 1998, Yukio Ninagawa produced an acclaimed version of Hamlet in the style of Nō theatre, which he took to London.

In the 1920 version, Asta Nielsen played Hamlet as a woman who spends her life disguised as a man.

In contrast to Zeffirelli, whose Hamlet was heavily cut, Kenneth Branagh adapted, directed, and starred in a 1996 version containing every word of Shakespeare's play, combining the material from the F1 and Q2 texts.

The same applies to the event of typing a particular version of Hamlet followed by copies of itself ad infinitum ; or Hamlet immediately followed by all the digits of pi ; these specific strings are equally infinite, they are not prohibited by the terms of the thought problem, and they each have a prior probability of 0.

With Luigi Squarzina in 1952 he co-founded and co-directed the Teatro d ' Arte Italiano, producing the first complete version of Hamlet in Italy, then rare works such as Seneca's Thyestes and Aeschylus's The Persians.

The Hameau de la Reine ( The Queen's Hamlet ), built for Marie-Antoinette in the park of the Château de Versailles, was an idealized version of the real life conditions of French farmers.

From references in other contemporary works, Kyd is also assumed to have been the writer of an early, lost version of Hamlet ( the so-called Ur-Hamlet ), with a play-within-a-play interlude.

He works mainly in the music hall tradition, although, in the past, has occasionally appeared in drama, including as Malvolio in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night on stage in Liverpool in 1971 ; on television in the cameo role of ' The Tollmaster ' in the 1987 Doctor Who story Delta and the Bannermen ; and as Yorick ( in silent flashback ) in Kenneth Branagh's film version of Shakespeare's Hamlet in 1996.

In early drafts, Spock plays Polonius in a Vulcan version of Hamlet, while Sulu drives a taxicab in an overcrowded metropolis.

Gielgud did voice the Ghost in both the stage and film version of the Richard Burton Hamlet, which he directed in 1964, and in the 1970 Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation starring Richard Chamberlain.

Film appearances included performances in Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again ( 1991 ), Branagh's full-text rendition of Hamlet ( 1996 ) as King Claudius, John Maybury's Love is the Devil ( 1998 ), a portrait of painter Francis Bacon, as Senator Gracchus in Gladiator ( 2000 ) with Russell Crowe, and as " The Duke " opposite Christopher Eccleston and Eddie Izzard in a post-apocalyptic version of Thomas Middleton's The Revenger's Tragedy ( 2002 ).

After Hamlet, it is the longest play in the canon and is the longest of the First Folio, whose version of Hamlet is shorter than its Quarto counterpart.

Prior to moving to Hollywood, she played the young Estella in David Lean's version of Great Expectations ( 1946 ) and Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet ( 1948 ), for which she received her first Oscar nomination.

No other actor has ever won an award for playing Polonius in any professional American stage version of Hamlet, nor for playing him in a film version of the play.

At the American publisher's insistence, Burgess allowed their editors to cut the redeeming final chapter from the U. Or the actor may fumble some of his lines in a group shot ; rather than discarding a good version of the shot, the director may just have the actor repeat the lines " in one " and cut to that solitary view when necessary.

A director's cut is a specially edited version of a film, and less often TV series, music video, commercials, comic book or video games, that is supposed to represent the director's own approved edit.

The restored cut, at 115 minutes, is thus not the traditional " director's cut ," but is closest to the director's preferred version, as it was reconstructed based on Peckinpah's notes, and according to his style in general.

He describes it simply as a second version that he is also satisfied with, even though the original released cut is still his preferred version.

In contrast, the director's cut of Scott's Kingdom of Heaven ( which was a commercial failure in its 2005 theatrical release ) is the true version of the film Scott wanted, nearly an hour longer and has been met with more critical acclaim than the original version.

Roger Ebert approves of the use of the label in unsuccessful films that had been tampered with by studio executives, such as Sergio Leone's original cut of Once Upon a Time in America, and the moderately successful theatrical version of Daredevil, which were altered by studio interference for their theatrical release.

Even Ridley Scott stated on the DVD commentary of Alien that the original theatrical release was his director's cut, and that the new version was released as a marketing ploy.

Another example is Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now Redux, which, like the original film, polarized the audience, with some fans considering the original version to be the definitive cut.

In video games, the term " director's cut " is usually used as a colloquialism to refer to an expanded version of a previously released game.

Linkin Park also has a director's cut version for their music video Faint ( which was also directed by Mark Romanek ) in which one of the band members spray paints the words " En Proceso " on a wall.

The current DVD version of the film restores the Japanese cut.

Otto's scenes, and those with Pilate's wife, were cut from the film after the script had gone to the publishers, and so they can be found in the published version of the script.

This brevity has suggested to many critics that the received version is based on a heavily cut source, perhaps a prompt-book for a particular performance.

In the latter enhanced version there appears a separation of material or large cut on the right arm of the creature and a mysterious object or deformity above the breasts.

The S4 and GT variants were both cut at the end of 1991 model year, making way for the final version of the 928.
