There the Gold Coast City stretches from Beenleigh and Russell Island to the border with New South Wales approximately south, and extends west to the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in World Heritage listed Lamington National Park.

In 1827, Allan Cunningham set out from the upper Hunter River, to explore west of the Dividing Range, discovering the Darling Downs ; returning in 1828 from Brisbane to discover Cunninghams Gap.

To the south, the region is bounded by low hills of the Great Dividing Range ; eastwards, the basin ends in a dry forested rise ; to the north the Avoca River runs slowly through the plains of the Wimmera before petering out in swamps near the Murray.
