The Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27 – 17 at Sun Devil Stadium in Super Bowl XXX for their fifth world championship.

The two teams met in the first regular season game the Cowboys ever played in 1960 ( a 35 – 28 loss to the Steelers ), the first-ever regular season victory for the expansion Cowboys in 1961, and would later meet in three Super Bowls, all of them closely contested events.

It is said that the rivalry was fueled in the 1970s due to the stark contrast of the teams: the Cowboys, being more of a " flashy " team with Roger Staubach's aerial attack and the " flex " Doomsday Defense ; while the Steelers were more of a " blue-collar " team with a strong running game and the 1970s-esque Steel Curtain defense, a contrast that still exists today.

Although the Cowboys are tied with the 49ers for the second most Super Bowl victories ( Steelers have 6 ), Dallas actually holds the record, with Pittsburgh, for the most Super Bowl games played ( 8 ) and solely holds the record the most Super Bowl MVPs with 7:

The Cowboys sealed the victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers by converting both of Brown's interceptions into touchdowns.

The team started off 2 – 0, defeating the Dallas Cowboys earning the NFL's highest winning percentage on opening days at. 750 with a record of 9 – 3 ), and shutting out the defending champs Pittsburgh Steelers.

They are third in appearances in a Super Bowl with seven ( the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys each have 8 ), and have the most appearances in the last 25 years.

The designated home team was first allowed its choice of jersey color for Super Bowl XIII, allowing the Cowboys to wear white vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the 1972 team faced no competition that possessed a better record than 8-6 in the regular season, the 1973 team played a much tougher schedule that included games against the Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Dallas Cowboys ( all playoff teams ), plus two games against a resurgent Buffalo Bills squad that featured 2, 000-yard rusher O. J.

Super Bowl X was an American football game between the National Football Conference ( NFC ) champion Dallas Cowboys and the American Football Conference ( AFC ) champion Pittsburgh Steelers to decide the National Football League ( NFL ) champion for the 1975 season.

The Steelers defeated the Cowboys by the score of 21 – 17 to win their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Super Bowl X featured a contrast of styles between the Steelers and the Cowboys, which were, at the time, the two most popular teams in the league.

On radio, Verne Lundquist and Al Wisk announced the game for the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network, and Jack Fleming and Myron Cope called the game for the Steelers Radio Network.

The Steelers won their second straight Super Bowl, largely through the plays by Swann and by stopping a rally by the Cowboys late in the fourth quarter.

Officials did not call a single penalty on the Steelers during the game, while the Cowboys were called for only 2 penalties for 20 yards.

On the opening kickoff, the Cowboys ran a reverse where rookie linebacker Thomas " Hollywood " Henderson took a handoff from Preston Pearson and returned the ball a Super Bowl record 48 yards before kicker Roy Gerela forced him out of bounds at the Steelers 44-yard line.

But on the first play of the game, Steelers defensive lineman L. C. Greenwood sacked Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, forcing him to fumble.

Instead of trying to immediately tie the game on a long passing play, the Steelers ran the ball on the first four plays of their ensuing possession, and then quarterback Terry Bradshaw completed a 32-yard pass to wide receiver Lynn Swann to reach the Cowboys 16-yard line.

Then on third down and one, the Steelers managed to fool the Cowboys.

The Steelers subsequently advanced to the Cowboys 36-yard line on their next possession, but on fourth down and two, Bradshaw's pass was broken up by Dallas safety Cliff Harris.

Then Steelers running back Mike Collier returned the free kick 25 yards to the Cowboys 45-yard line.

Then on the first play of the Cowboys ' next drive, Steelers defensive back Mike Wagner intercepted a pass from Staubach and returned it 19 yards to the Dallas 7-yard line.

The Cowboys defense again managed to prevent a touchdown, but Gerela kicked an 18-yard field goal to increase the Steelers lead to 15 – 10.

After play resumed, Gerela missed the extra point attempt, but the Steelers now had a 21 – 10 lead with 3: 02 left in the game, and the Cowboys needed two touchdowns to come back.

The Colts won their first postseason game as the Indianapolis Colts in 1995 and would go onto the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, coming Hail Mary pass reception away from a trip to the Super Bowl XXX.

Indianapolis finished the season with a 14 – 2 record, the best record in the league that year and the best in a 16 games season for the franchise, but would go onto lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers in divisional round, a disappointing end to the season.

This was the only one of the four Super Bowls the Steelers of the 1970s played in that the team wore their white jerseys, and the only Super Bowl the team would wear white at all until Super Bowl XL 31 years later.

It was the first Super Bowl with a true heavyweight title-fight feel, given the Steelers ' and Cowboys ' unquestioned status as the two best teams in the NFL, and the honor of the first three-time Super Bowl champion that would go to the winner.

The Cowboys would later repeat the option of wearing white jerseys as the " home " team in Super Bowl XXVII, while the Redskins would do so in Super Bowl XVII and, ironically, the Steelers ( who always wear their black jerseys in home games ) in Super Bowl XL due to the team's success on the road that season.

Greene responded by saying the Steelers didn't need to say they were the best, they would just go out on the field and " get the job done.

The Chargers went into the final game of the season vs. the Steelers needing a win to get the # 2 seed ( a loss would have given that spot to the Miami Dolphins ), which came with a first round bye and a home game in the divisional round of the playoffs.

In time, Mitchell would be joined by black stars like receiver Charley Taylor, running back Larry Brown, defensive back Brig Owens, and guard John Nisby from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hines Ward of the Steelers sent his personal hyperbaric chamber ,( similar to the one pictured ), to his hotel to sleep in believing it would help heal his sprained medial collateral ligament he suffered in their playoff win against the Ravens.

The rematch would be just as good, with the Cowboys being a Jackie Smith catch away from beating the Steelers in the rematch.

Meanwhile the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers would not exist until 1933, three years after the team left town and two years after the franchise folded altogether.

A possible takeover of M & T by PNC would be ironic, considering it is based in Pittsburgh, the home of the Ravens archrivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and is already a major sponsor for both the Steelers and the Cleveland Browns within the AFC North.

If the house had not been torn down for Highway Route 65, it would be facing Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Though met with negative reaction from Steelers ownership, the proposal was used as a " fallback position " that would be used if discussions for a new stadium failed.

Steelers ownership stated that failing to build a new stadium would hurt the franchise's chances of signing players who might opt to sign with other teams, such as the other three teams in the Steelers division who had all recently built new football-only stadiums.
