In 1991 Barrington licensed compiler technology from a company called Jensen & Partners International ( JPI ).

Niels and his team were working on a new compiler technology at Borland when Philippe Kahn decided to buy Wizard C, and call it Turbo C. Niels and several other developers left Borland and started JPI, where they continued to work on their compiler technology, christened TopSpeed, which they bought from Borland for $ 1. 7 million.

The JPI compiler for the Clarion language produced true machine code EXEs, LIBs and DLLs.

An agreement was reached and they spun off a company called Jensen & Partners International ( JPI ), later TopSpeed.

During this time the relationship between Clarion Software and JPI grew closer, and on April 30, 1992, Clarion merged with JPI to form an entity which would eventually be called TopSpeed Corporation.

JPI was founded in 1987 by Niels Jensen, who had earlier ( 1979 or 1981 ) been one of the founders of Borland.

The CDD IDE was completely new and based on the JPI IDE.

The Commander Keen series, a platform game introducing one of the first smooth side-scrolling game engines for MS-DOS, brought Id Software into the gaming mainstream.

Multiplan was released first for computers running CP / M ; it was developed using a Microsoft proprietary p-code C compiler as part of a portability strategy that facilitated ports to systems such as MS-DOS, Xenix, Commodore 64, Texas Instruments TI-99 / 4A, Radio Shack TRS-80 Model II, TRS-80 Model 100 ( on ROM ), Apple II, and Burroughs B-20 series.

It wasn't until 1985 that Kaypro began producing IBM compatible MS-DOS machines, the Kaypro 16 ( transportable, same form factor as the Kaypro II ), the Kaypro PC, Kaypro 286i ( the first 286 IBM PC AT compatible ), the Kaypro 386, and the Kaypro 2000 ( a rugged aluminum-body battery-powered laptop with a detachable keyboard ).

** Kaypro 286i-A 6 MHz 286 desktop, it was the first IBM PC / AT compatible, with dual 1. 2 MB floppy drives standard and an extensive software package but no MS-DOS 3. 0, which had not yet been released, requiring the user to purchase PC-DOS 3. 0 from IBM.
