Koopa Troopas, or just simply Koopas, known in Japan as, are fictional race of turtle or tortoise-like creatures from the Mario series of video games, and also appearing in its sister Yoshi series.

Yoshi has a variety of abilities that render him unique amongst other characters in the Mario series.

While being ridden, Yoshi acts as an extra hit point ; taking damage will cause Mario ( or whoever is riding Yoshi ) to fly off.

The inspiration for Yoshi can be traced back further, to the green dragon Tamagon in the 1984 video game Devil World.
