The Common Swift ( Apus apus ) is a medium-sized bird, superficially similar to the Barn Swallow or House Martin but somewhat larger.

The Common House Martin ( Delichon urbicum ), sometimes called the Northern House Martin or, particularly in Europe, just House Martin, is a migratory passerine bird of the swallow family which breeds in Europe, north Africa and temperate Asia ; and winters in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia.

As an attractive bird which feeds on flying insects, the House Martin has usually been tolerated by humans when it shares their buildings for nesting, although the accumulation of droppings below breeding birds can be a nuisance leading to some destruction of nests.

This species lacks the wealth of literary references associated with its relative, the Barn Swallow, although it is possible that some of the older mentions for that bird might equally well refer to the House Martin.
