By possessing both sides of the Øresund Strait, as well as The Belts, Denmark had effective control over the entrance to the Baltic Sea and was able to monopolize trade through the sounds.

In the 17th and 18th centuries during the period of absolutism its primary aim was to control the Strait of Øresund against Sweden.

The name Helsingør is derived from the word hals meaning " neck " or " narrow strait ", referring to the narrow strait ( Øresund, or The Sound ) between what is now Helsingør and Helsingborg, Sweden.
