The most recent Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria and the Patriarch of All Africa on the Holy See of Saint Mark was Pope Shenouda III, who died on March 17, 2012, for whom a successor has not yet been chosen.

He was enthroned as Pope Shenouda III, the 117th Pope of Alexandria and patriarch of the See of St. Mark on 14 November 1971, nearly nine months after the death of Pope Cyril VI of Alexandria.

Some Copts argue that the choice of Pope Shenouda III as Pope ( and Bishop ) of Alexandria was not canonical, as Shenouda was already a bishop ( although without a diocese ), arguably violating Canon 15 of the Council of Nicea against the translation of bishops from one See to another.
