On Palm Sunday, 1084, Henry IV solemnly enthroned Clement at St. Peter ’ s Basilica and on Easter Day, Clement returned the favor and crowned Henry IV as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

Henry IV ’ s insistence that Antipope Clement III was the real pope had initially been popular with some of the nobles, and even many of the bishops of Germany.

In his critique of the theology of Clement of Alexandria, Photius in his Myriobiblon held that Clement ’ s views reflected a quasi-docetic view of the nature of Christ, writing that Clement " He hallucinates that the Word was not incarnate but only seems to be.

The Historical Society ’ s holdings in artifacts and decorative arts include George Washington ’ s camp bed from Valley Forge, the desk at which Clement Clarke Moore wrote “ A Visit from Saint Nicholas ,” one of the world ’ s largest collections of Tiffany lamps and glasswork, and a collection of more than 550 late nineteenth-century American board games.

" However, in Clement of Rome ministerial activity is liturgical: the undifferentiated ' presbyter-bishops ' are to " make offerings to the Lord at the right time and in the right places " something which is simply not defined by the evangelists.

As his three major works demonstrate, Clement was influenced by Hellenistic philosophy to a greater extent than any other Christian thinker of his time, and in particular by Plato and the Stoics.

In 211, Alexander of Jerusalem wrote a letter commending him to the Church of Antioch, which may imply that Clement was living in in Cappadocia at that time.

His experience in the region and in particular his perceived Labour sympathies at that time led to Clement Attlee appointing him Viceroy of India after the war, charged with overseeing the transition of British India to independence no later than 1948.

On the death of Clement in 1721, Alberoni boldly appeared at the conclave, and took part in the election of Innocent XIII, after which he was for a short time imprisoned by the new pontiff on the demand of Spain, but was cleared of all charges by a commission of his fellow Cardinals.

On 6 December 1708, Pope Clement XI made the feast of the Conception of Mary, at that time still with the Nativity of Mary formula for the Mass, a Holy Day of Obligation.

' For this purpose ,' pursues the Pontiff, ' we have caused the Tridentine and Clementine Indices to be added to this general Index, and also all the relevant decrees up to the present time, that have been issued since the Index of our predecessor Clement, that nothing profitable to the faithful interested in such matters might seem omitted.

During this time the Antipopes Clement VII and Benedict XIII continued to hold court as pope in Avignon under the protection of the French monarchy.

Clement IV, who was in France at the time of his election, was compelled to enter Italy in disguise.

Clement V's pontificate was also a disastrous time for Italy.

Clement is most notable as the Pope who reigned during the time of the Black Death ( 1348 – 1350 ), during which he granted remission of sins to all that died of the plague.

During his time as pope, Clement XI made a concerted effort to acquire Christian manuscripts in Syriac from Egypt and other places in the Middle East, greatly expanding the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana's collection of Syriac works.

The King's letter to Clement XIII promised that his allowance of 100 piastres each year would be withdrawn for the whole order, should any one of them venture at any time to write anything in self-defence or in criticism of the motives for the expulsion, motives that he refused to discuss, then or in the future.

Mahudel is careful not to take credit for the idea of a succession of usages in time but states: " it is Michel Mercatus, physician of Clement VIII who first had this idea ".

Avignon, which at the beginning of the 14th century was a town of no great importance, underwent extensive development during the time the seven Avignon popes and two anti-popes, Clement V to Benedict XIII made their residences there.

In 1309 the city was chosen by Clement V as his residence, and from that time till 1377 was the papal seat.
