Outside Europe, the escapement mechanism had been known and used in medieval China, as the Song Dynasty horologist and engineer Su Song ( 1020 – 1101 ) incorporated it into his astronomical clock-tower of Kaifeng in 1088.

There were many great encyclopedists throughout Chinese history, including the scientist and statesman Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) with his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, the statesman, inventor, and agronomist Wang Zhen ( active 1290 – 1333 ) with his Nong Shu of 1313, and the written Tiangong Kaiwu of Song Yingxing ( 1587 – 1666 ), the latter of whom was termed the " Diderot of China " by British historian Joseph Needham.

Guillermi's version is mostly copied from other works with small additions or excisions from the papal biographies of Pandulf, nephew of Hugo of Alatri, which in turn was copied almost verbatim from the original Liber Pontificalis ( with the notable exception of the biography of Pope Leo IX ), then from other sources until Pope Honorius II ( 1124 – 1130 ), and with contemporary information from Pope Paschal II ( 1099 – 1118 to Pope Urban II ( 1088 – 1099 ).

Berengar of Tours ( c. 999 – January 6, 1088 ) was a French 11th century Christian theologian and Archdeacon of Angers, a scholar whose leadership of the cathedral school at Chartres set an example of intellectual inquiry through the revived tools of dialectic that was soon followed at cathedral schools of Laon and Paris, and who disputed with the Church leadership over the doctrine of transubstantiation in the Eucharist.

A monk of the Cluniac order, he was created cardinal priest of the Titulus S. Clementi by Pope Gregory VII ( 1073 – 85 ) about 1076, and was consecrated pope in succession to Pope Urban II ( 1088 – 99 ) on 19 August 1099.

The Song Dynasty Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) experimented with a camera obscura, and was the first to apply geometrical and quantitative attributes to it in his book of 1088 AD, the Dream Pool Essays.

They replaced earlier double slipways that had caused trouble and are mentioned by the Chinese polymath Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) in his book Dream Pool Essays ( published in 1088 ), and fully described in the Chinese historical text Song Shi ( compiled in 1345 ):

Shen Kuo permanently moved to the Dream Brook Estate in 1088, and in that same year he completed his life's written work of the Dream Pool Essays, naming the book after his garden-estate property.

First known written mention of Birgte is dated 1088 AD when single farms dominated the area.

Desiderius, abbot of Monte Cassino was first chosen pope as Victor III when Gregory VII died in 1085, but after Victor's short reign, Otho was elected Pope Urban II by acclamation ( March 1088 ) at a small meeting of cardinals and other prelates held in Terracina in March 1088.

In a garden estate on the outskirts of Zhenjiang, the scientist and statesman Shen Kuo ( 1031-1095 AD ) lived the rest of his days in isolation, where he wrote his famous Dream Pool Essays ( 1088 ).

In his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, Shen Kuo took an interdisciplinary approach to archaeology, fusing that subject with his work in optics, metallurgy, music, and geometry.

In his Dream Pool Essays (; Mengxi Bitan ) of 1088, Shen was the first to describe the magnetic needle compass, which would be used for navigation ( first described in Europe by Alexander Neckam in 1187 ).

Although it has become quite accepted that Levi ben Gerson first described Jacob's staff, the Sinologist Joseph Needham theorizes that the Song Dynasty Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ), in his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, described a Jacob's staff.
