In February 1860 Iowa Representative Samuel Curtis introduced a bill to build the railroad.

Charles Curtis ( January 25, 1860 – February 8, 1936 ) was a United States Representative, a longtime United States Senator from Kansas later chosen as Senate Majority Leader by his Republican colleagues, and the 31st Vice President of the United States ( 1929 – 1933 ).

Born in January 1860 in Topeka, Kansas Territory prior to the arrival of statehood in January 1861, Vice President Curtis is notable as an Executive Branch officer born in a territory rather than state of the Union.

Curtis married Anna Elizabeth Baird ( 1860 – 1924 ), with whom he had three children: Permelia Jeannette Curtis, Henry " Harry " King Curtis and Leona Virginia Curtis.

Curtis was re-elected in 1858 and 1860.

In 1860, Wilson and three others, including incumbent Samuel R. Curtis, vied for the Republican nomination to represent Iowa's 1st congressional district in the U. S. House of Representatives.

Lycoming claims to have been founded in 1845 by " Madame Ellen Curtis Demorest ", however, the early history of the company ( especially prior to 1860 ) is unclear.

By 1840 Curtis suffered with poor eyesight which worsened in later life and he had financial problems. These were partly solved by publishing a number of entomological articles in the Gardener's Chronicle, as " Ruricola ", and in the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society. This led to the profitable Farm Insects: being the natural history and economy of the insects injurious to the field crops of Great Britain and Ireland published in 1860.

They were also members of the Northern Art Worker's Guild and were close friends of Edgar Wood ( 1860 – 1935 ) the leading Arts and Crafts architect in the North of England and a founding member of the group.

" On June 26, 1860, Flora gave birth to a son, Philip St. George Cooke Stuart, but his father changed the name to James Ewell Brown Stuart, Jr. (" Jimmie "), in late 1861 out of disgust with his father-in-law.

Carter Henry Harrison, Jr. ( April 23, 1860, Chicago, Illinois-December 25, 1953 ; buried in Graceland Cemetery ) served as Mayor of Chicago ( 1897 – 1905 and 1911 – 1915 ).

John Herbert Dillinger, Jr. was born on June 22, 1903, in the Oak Hill section of Indianapolis, Indiana, the younger of two children born to John Wilson Dillinger ( July 2, 1864 – November 3, 1943 ) and Mary Ellen " Mollie " Lancaster ( 1860 – 1907 ).

Frederick and Mary had two children together who survived infancy: a daughter, Marion ( born October 28, 1861 ) and a son Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Their first child, John Theodore Olmsted, was born on June 13, 1860 and died in infancy.

Apparently later trying to bolster his black identity, Powell, Jr. told stories of his paternal grandparents being born to slavery, but his paternal grandmother, Sally Dunning, was born as at least the third generation of free people of color ; in the 1860 census, she is listed as a free mulatto, along with her mother, grandmother, and siblings.

In 1847 he studied at Yale Law School, taught school briefly at a women's institute, and the following year moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he practiced his profession in partnership with William Dennison, Jr. ( who was to become Governor of Ohio in 1860 ).
