Esther Jane Williams ( born August 8, 1921 ; some sources cite 1922 ) is a retired American competitive swimmer and MGM movie star.
Born in Kolozsvár ( then Austria-Hungary, now Romania: Cluj-Napoca ), he was the son of Esther ( b. 1891 ) and Leo Gold ( b. 1890 ), and had a brother, William Gold ( born 1921 ).
He married Vreda Esther Mary Lascelles, granddaughter of William Beauclerk, 10th Duke of St Albans, on 21 April 1921.

The AAF was duly formed on 31 March 1921 ; Williams deliberately chose this day rather than 1 April, the founding date of the RAF three years earlier, " to prevent nasty people referring to us as ' April Fools '".
