David Warren " Dave " Brubeck ( born December 6, 1920 ) is an American jazz pianist.

His long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, wrote the Dave Brubeck Quartet's best remembered piece, " Take Five ", which is in 5 / 4 time and has endured as a jazz classic on one of the top-selling jazz albums, Time Out.

Following a near-fatal swimming accident which incapacitated him for several months, Brubeck organized The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951, with Desmond on saxophone.

In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded Time Out, an album their label was enthusiastic about but nonetheless hesitant to release.

In 1961 Dave Brubeck appeared in a few scenes of the British Jazz / Beat film All Night Long, which starred Patrick McGoohan and Richard Attenborough.

In the early 1960s Dave Brubeck was the program director of WJZZ-FM radio ( now WEZN ).

What began as a special archive, consisting of the personal document collection of the Brubecks, has since expanded to provide fellowships and educational opportunities in jazz for students, also leading to having one of the main streets the school resides on named in his honor, Dave Brubeck Way .< ref >

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck composed " Koto Song " that, while not featuring the koto itself, is played to allow the piano to emulate its sound.

This was bitterly noted by Davis, who claimed the invention of the cool style and resented the success that was later enjoyed — in large part because of the media's attention — by white " cool jazz " musicians ( Mulligan and Dave Brubeck in particular ).

Paul Desmond ( born Paul Emil Breitenfeld ; November 25, 1924 – May 30, 1977 ) was a jazz alto saxophonist and composer born in San Francisco, best known for the work he did in the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for penning that group's greatest hit, " Take Five ".

But Desmond came to his home in San Francisco one day while Dave was out back hanging diapers on a laundry line, and Iola let him in and took him to Brubeck.

Desmond had first met Dave Brubeck in 1944 while still in the military.

That is how the Dave Brubeck Quartet had its start, a group that began in 1951 and ended in December 1967.

During the 1970s Desmond rejoined with Dave Brubeck for several reunion tours including " Two Generations of Brubeck ".

In their private lives Dave Brubeck and his family were very close to Paul Desmond, though the two men possessed very different personalities.

The concert made international headlines, led to a Time cover story ( Dave Brubeck and Thelonious Monk are the only other jazz musicians featured on the cover the magazine ), and resulted in an album that would become the best-selling long-playing recording of Ellington's career.

" May I Baby ", the b-side of " Soul Man ", is also regarded as a classic non-hot 100 song on the LP by Whitburn's " Top Pop Singles " guide, and was a popular live song performed frequently by Sam & Dave.

Sam & Dave also released " Can't You Find Another Way ( of Doing It )" which charted at # 54 Pop and # 20 R & B, but which was not included in the I Thank You LP.

The year 1969 started well, with the Atlantic release of The Best of Sam & Dave LP in January.

In 1978, Sam & Dave re-recorded old hits for the LP Sweet & Funky Gold ( Gusto ), and re-recorded songs and other soul hits during this period in Nashville for an album for K-Tel Records, The Original Soul Man.

A month later, their debut album Crossing The Red Sea was released, and has become one of the most highly regarded albums of the punk era, with Dave Thompson calling it " a devastating debut, one of the finest albums not only of the punk era, but of the 1970s as a whole ", Trouser Press calling it " the equal of the first Sex Pistols or Clash LP, a hasty statement that captures an exciting time ", and several other writers including it in lists of all-time greatest albums.

Dave recorded two songs of his own for this LP, the acoustic " Strangers " and the hard-rocking " Rats ".

Dave Swarbrick, fiddle-player in the English folk-rock band Fairport Convention, came across a series of old newspaper articles about Lee and was inspired to compose the folk rock opera Babbacombe Lee, which was recorded and released by Fairport Convention as an LP in 1971.

His first recorded LP was Pick Yourself Up on Pye ( NSPL 18177 ) issued in 1967, with Peter McGurk ( Dudley Moore Trio ) on bass with the orchestra and Dave Holland on bass on the four tracks featuring the trio without an orchestra.

Songwriters Tom Russell and Dave Alvin addressed Haley's demise in musical terms with " Haley's Comet " on Alvin's 1991 album Blue Blvd.

Dave Edmunds ' band Love Sculpture included the Mars movement on their 1970 album " Forms and Feelings ," though this was only included in the U. S. version of the album due to Holst's family preventing worldwide release of the track.
