The German spoken today over the range of the former Alemanni is termed Alemannic German, and is recognised among the subgroups of the High German languages.

Alemannic runic inscriptions such as those on the Pforzen buckle are among the earliest testimonies of Old High German.

The High German consonant shift is thought to have originated around the 5th century either in Alemannia or among the Lombards ; before that the dialect spoken by Alemannic tribes was little different from that of other West Germanic peoples.

Alsatian ( Alsatian and ( literally Alsatian-German ); ; or Elsässerdeutsch ) is a Low Alemannic German dialect spoken in most of Alsace, a region in eastern France which has passed between French and German control many times.

Genetically, Bavarian is part of the Upper German family along with Alemannic ( which includes Swabian and Swiss German ), whereas Standard German is part of the Middle German family, closer to Upper Saxon German, which – linguistically – is a Thuringian dialect.

Alemán Coloniero, spoken in Colonia Tovar, Venezuela, is a dialect that belongs to the Low Alemannic branch of German.

As for Western Austria, the dialect of the state of Vorarlberg and of a small part of North Tyrol has linguistically and culturally more in common with German-speaking Switzerland and Baden-Württemberg or Swabia in Southwest Germany as it is an Alemannic dialect like Swiss German or Swabian German.

The High Alemannic dialects are spoken in Liechtenstein and in most of German-speaking Switzerland ( for instance Bernese German or Zürich German ) except for the Highest Alemannic dialects in the South and for the Low Alemannic Basel German dialect in the North West.

Some linguists and organisations that differentiate between languages and dialects primarily on the grounds of mutual intelligibility, such as SIL International and UNESCO, describe Alemannic as one or several independent languages.

There are very few languages that have initial consonant length ; among them are Pattani Malay, Chuukese, a few Romance languages such as Sicilian and Neapolitan, and many of the High Alemannic German dialects ( such as Thurgovian ).

Native American languages ( such as Siglit, Quechua, and Greenlandic ) and minority languages of France ( Lexique Étymologique du Breton moderne on Breton ; Le Dialecte Alaman de Colmar on Alemannic ) also claimed his attention.

In the West, the South and the South-East, they are surrounded by Romance languages ; in the North, by High Alemannic dialects.

The Hungarian language is the only major national language of a European and Western country to use this order, though some regional languages like the Basque language and the Alemannic German dialect sometimes also do this.
