The liturgical communities in western Christianity that derive their rituals from the Roman Missal, including those particular communities which use the Roman Missal itself ( Roman Catholics ), the Book of Common Prayer ( Anglicans / Episcopalians ), the Lutheran Book of Worship ( ELCA Lutherans ), Lutheran Service Book ( Missouri-Synod Lutherans ), use the Apostles ' Creed and interrogative forms of it in their rites of Baptism, which they consider to be the first sacrament of initiation into the Church.

Baptism ( from the Greek noun Βάπτισμα baptisma ; itself derived from baptismos, washing ) is a Christian rite of admission ( or adoption ), almost invariably with the use of water, into the Christian Church generally and also a particular church tradition.

The differ from the larger body of Baptists in holding three ordinances rather than two, namely: Believer's Baptism, the Lord's supper, and the washing of feet.

Baptism may occur in any body of water that will allow full immersion, though many Brethren assembly halls will have a baptistry.

These realities form a " composite faithfulness " and are ( i ) " perseverance in the apostolic doctrine "; ( ii ) " the will to proclaim God's word "; ( iii ) " communion in the fundamental continuity of the Church, the Body of Christ, the faithful celebration of Baptism and the Eucharist "; ( iv ) " succession in the laying on of hands, the sign of ministerial continuity ".

Baptism has been called a sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ.

The Anglican Articles of Religion hold that only Baptism and the Lord's Supper are to be counted as sacraments of the gospel, and assert that other rites considered to be sacraments by such as the Roman Catholic and Eastern churches were not ordained by Christ and do not have the nature of a sacrament in the absence of any physical matter such as the water in Baptism and the Bread and Wine in the Eucharist.
