This led to the formation of Celtic Football Club in 1888 by Marist Brother Walfrid, to raise money to help the community.

St Joseph's was founded by Brother Walfrid, the founder of Celtic F. C.

The statue of Brother Walfrid ( bottom left ) was erected in 2005.

Since 2005, statues of Brother Walfrid, Jimmy Johnstone and Jock Stein have been erected outside the Main Stand.

Celtic Football Club was formed at a meeting in St. Mary's church hall in Glasgow, by Marist Brother Walfrid on November 6, 1887, with the purpose stated in the official club records as " being to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes ".

The charity established by Brother Walfrid was named ' The Poor Children's Dinner Table '.

A number of sports are played in the town, including gaelic football and soccer, played at Corran park and Brother Walfrid Memorial respectively, Golf at the nine-hole course on the outskirts of the town, along with numerous other sports, particularly at under-age level.

It was on a visit to the Maley home in Cathcart in December 1887 to invite his brother Tom Maley to join Celtic that Brother Walfrid and the rest of the Celtic deputation first met Willie Maley ( Tom was out courting his wife-to-be ), and their casual invitation to Willie to also come along was perhaps the most important in Celtic's history.

Brother Walfrid ( 18 May 1840-17 April 1915 ) is the religious name of Andrew Kerins, an Irish Marist Brother and founder of Celtic Football Club.

The statue cost ₤ 30, 000 which was funded entirely by donations organised by the Brother Walfrid Committee, including ₤ 5, 000 from then chairman of the club, Brian Quinn ..

A further sculpture, a bust of Brother Walfrid, commemorating his links with his home town of Ballymote, was unveiled in the public park there in 2005.
