Set between 1865 and the Depression, Steamboat Gothic discusses the change in transportation methods from steamboat to railroad and the effect the change had upon the plantations along the River Road.

The steamboat Sultana was destroyed in an explosion on 27 April 1865, resulting in the greatest maritime disaster in United States history.

Later sequels included Henry James Byron's Dundreary Married and Done For, and John Oxenford's Brother Sam ( 1862 ; revived in 1865 ), a play about Dundreary's brother.

He won wide popularity from his interpretation of Sam Slingsby in John Oxenford's Brother Sam ( 1862 ; revived in 1865 ), a play about Dundreary's brother.

The Brother Jonathan was a paddle steamer that crashed on an uncharted rock near Point St. George, off the coast of Crescent City, California, on July 30, 1865.

The light's location was selected because the area had a history of serious maritime accidents and its construction was a direct result of the wreck in 1865 of the Brother Jonathan.

Within Hoosier National Forest, two miles ( 3 km ) south of Chambersburg, lies the former Lick Creek Settlement Site, a settlement of free blacks led by the Quaker Jonathan Lindley from around 1819 to around 1865.
