The game is a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and follows on directly from the end of the game, in which Sonic defeated his enemy, Dr. Robotnik ; crash-landing on a floating island, Sonic encounters new character Knuckles the Echidna, and must once more retrieve the Chaos Emeralds while also working to stop Dr. Robotnik from relaunching his ship, the Death Egg.

After Sonic defeats Dr. Robotnik at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, his space station, the Death Egg, crash-lands on a mystical floating landmass called Angel Island.

As Dr. Robotnik begins to repair the damaged ship, he meets up with Knuckles the Echidna, the last surviving member of an ancient civilization of Echidnas that once inhabited the island.

Knowing Sonic and Tails will try to track him down, and realizing he can use the Master Emerald to power the ship, Dr. Robotnik dupes Knuckles into believing Sonic is trying to steal his Emerald.

Shortly after, Sonic and Tails in their biplane, the Tornado, are in search of Dr. Robotnik.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, the mad scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik ( known as Doctor Eggman in the original Japanese release ) is capturing innocent animals and transforming them into rogue robots.

A battle against Dr. Robotnik is held at the end of each third act.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik, returns, again bent on world domination.

The player must dodge Badniks and traps set by Knuckles, collect Rings and uncover the Chaos Emeralds while guiding Sonic and his sidekick Tails through six different Zones, trailing the deranged scientist Dr. Robotnik.

The player, as either Sonic or Knuckles, must collect Rings, avoid Badniks and escape traps as the antagonist, Dr. Robotnik, initiates another plot to take over the world.

In Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic travels to Flicky Island only to find that Dr. Robotnik has turned the mysterious birds known as Flickies into vicious robots.

In Sonic Spinball, the deranged scientist Dr. Robotnik is once again turning the animals of Mobius into robots using a monstrous contraption named the Veg-O-Fortress.

In Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Dr. Robotnik is turning the citizens of Beanville into devious robots in a bid to rid the world of Mobius of music and fun forever.

* In the ill-fated series finale of Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik created a station called the Doomsday Project, capable of launching saucer-like pods all over Mobius, attacking everyone and everything, forcing them into submission, giving Robotnik his long-awaited total domination.

In the present day, Knuckles the Echidna is guarding the Master Emerald on the floating Angel Island when Chaos is released from the emerald by Dr. Robotnik.

They go to Tails's workshop in the Mystic Ruins, where Dr. Robotnik appears with Chaos.

Dr. Robotnik feeds Tails ' emerald to Chaos, transforming Chaos into a stronger form ; Dr. Robotnik explains that Chaos will grow stronger with each emerald he eats and will eventually become invincible and destroy Station Square for him.
