Under Docherty's successor, Dave Sexton, Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1970, beating Leeds United 2 – 1 in a final replay.

The 1997 – 98 campaign saw Newcastle finish in only 13th place and, despite Dalglish achieving some notable successes during the season ( including a 3 – 2 UEFA Champions League win over Barcelona and an FA Cup final appearance against Arsenal ), he was sacked by Freddie Shepherd after two draws in the opening two games of the subsequent 1998 – 1999 season, and replaced by former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit.

Arsenal regained the league, beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in the penultimate game of the season to complete the club's second double under Wenger ; Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2 – 0 to win the FA Cup four days prior.

An inaugural game using the new FA rules was initially scheduled for Battersea Park on 2 January 1864, but enthusiastic members of the FA couldn't wait for the new year and an experimental game was played at Mortlake on 19 December 1863 between Morley's Barnes team and their neighbours Richmond ( who were not members of the FA ), ending in a goalless draw.

Chelsea eventually reached an FA Cup final in 1967, where they faced Tottenham Hotspur, but the team got outplayed on the day and Bonetti could do little to stop Spurs winning 2 – 1.

During his time as a Chelsea coach, he was persuaded to play 2 games for Isthmian League Division 2 side, Woking, including an FA Cup debut in a 1 – 0 win over Football Conference side Weymouth.

In terms of cup performance the club was superb, reaching the 2nd round of the League Cup losing only 1 – 2 to Queens Park Rangers, the quarter finals of the Football League Trophy losing 0 – 2 to Leeds United and the 4th round of the FA Cup losing 1 – 3 to Premier League team Fulham.
